  • Need to buy long (75ft) coaxial for cable internet modem. What's the best kind?

Short version: I need to extend my current coaxial from my modem by about 60ft, what type of cable should I buy so that I don't experience a slower internet connection?

Full story: We need to move the room that our internet modem is in because my wife and I are expecting in April, and she wants the current computer room to be a baby room.

We rent a basement from our landlady who lives upstairs, and the home is pretty old. There are no cable outlets anywhere, it's currently rigged where someone before us drilled a small hole between the edge of a window frame and the foundation and then re-caulked it and thats where the external wire comes in and connects to a modem. Comcast said they aren't allowed to drill through foundation like that anymore, and I'm not comfortable (even if I had permission from landlady) attempting the same set-up through the other room's window on my own.

The wire just connects to a modem for internet.. we don't have cable television. I already have a wireless router that we use with laptops, ipods, etc., and while I have a wireless card in my desktop PC, I want the physical connection so I can enjoy the full speed I pay for and not lose a bunch of it.

So, basically, I'm considering just getting a long, 50-75ft coaxial and running it along the ceiling with tacks into the new room. What is the best type of cable to purchase for this purpose in terms of most negligible signal degradation?

  • Explain drug relapse in terms of the Rescorla-Wagner model of associative learning?

Particularly how a recovering addict who simply sees needles or other drug paraphernalia (doesn't actually see drugs) can experience the "craving" for drugs even after months or years of being clean. If you could actually use the Rescorla-Wagner equation and explain algebraically what is occurring, that would be great.

  • Some fonts not appearing in powerpoint 2007?

My professor posts his lectures online in power point 2007 (.pptx) form. Everything was fine until earlier this week the text suddenly disappeared from all the presentations. I had these downloaded on my harddrive, and files that worked weeks ago when I opened them no longer had any text visible.

After investigating some I found that the text is still there, but I have to manually change the font in each presentation in order to see it. And that doesn't fix the font inside table cells.. I have to manually change the font in each of the tables. The font my professor used when he created the slides was comic sans ms, and I usually change it all to arial or something and it works just fine.

My question is how can I quickly fix this so it doesn't happen again and I don't have to deal with manually changing all the fonts in order to read the slides? The most puzzling thing is that I used to be able to read it all fine, it the fonts he wrote in, up until a week ago. I remember around that time I was messing with different things in powerpoint while I was trying to view multiple slides on one page, but I don't think I changed any settings.

Does anybody know what is going on?

  • Should I retake a D+ for med school?

I just found out that I got a D+ in my neuroanatomy class this semester - and neuroscience is my major!

It's not that I didn't learn anything or am stupid; I guess I just didn't think the class would really be that difficult for the first half of the semester. I did very poorly on the midterm and then I realized I had a lot of catch up work to do. I did OK on the final... but it only raised by percentage from a 59% to a 68% and hence a D+ in the class.

I've done well (Bs and As) in my other science classes - physics, biology, general chemistry, Ochem. I've never gotten anything lower than a B before except 1 C in a non-science class. I know these grades aren't super stellar like straight As would be, most of that is due to a mediocre first year and a half or so where I got mostly Bs and a few As. Still - I've never done something like this before and I extremely discouraged and em brassed right now.

My overall GPA is a 3.45. I'm hoping to bring that up to a 3.6 or so by the time I apply to medical school next summer.

I feel like I understand subject material well, but I just have a hard time getting the A instead of the B sometimes.

***The one thing I am confident in is that I can do well on the MCAT. I've taken some practice tests and have first scored a 33 and now after more practice am getting 36s or 37s - with at least an 11 in each category, I even got a 13 on the biology section on one of the practice tests.***

The class is 2 credits and honestly whether I get a D or an A barely affects my GPA at this point (.02 points). I do not need to retake it in order to graduate, but should I anyway to show that I'm not an idiot? Or do med schools really just look at your overall GPA and overall science GPA, without too much care about a single bad grade?

  • Organic Chemistry - hyrdroboration?

    https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B46xx2KWf3PkNTAwM...

Can anybody explain the mechanism for this reaction? I know (from the answer key) that the pi-bond breaks and somehow you end up with an OH group on the terminal carbon (the one farthest from the methyl group) - so the major product is 3-methylbutanol.

I understand how hydroboration works if an alkene is added to BH3/THF followed by H2O2/NaOH, but as you can see from the problem this is slightly different... a tertiary BH instead of BH3 in THF...

  • How can I emit lots and lots of CO2 and other substances "green" people hate?

I really, really hate the so called "green" culture/movement. I think that for the most part it is a major deception and borderline scam that has its roots in political ulterior motives and elitism. I know there are people out there who will take your money and claim to "offset" your CO2 emissions by planting tress or other stupid stuff.

I want to make such things as obsolete as possible by emitting an extraordinary amount of CO2 and/or other so-called pollutants.

What are some things I can do legally, but relatively easily, to produce such awesome quantities of CO2?

  • What is wrong with google's "search suggestion" feature?

It is easily manipulated or hacked by pranksters?

Here are some examples of "suggestions" google offers when you type in a few words into their search bar:

The first suggestion when you enter "why won't" is "why won't my parakeet eat my diarrhea"

The first suggestion when you enter "is there" is "is there anyway i can get this popular guy to get me pregnant"

The second suggestion for "I am" is "i am extremely terrified of chinese people"

The first suggestion for "I like" is "i like to tape my thumbs to my hands to see what it would be like to be a dinosaur"

If you don't believe me, try it yourself. Go to google.com and enter those key words into the search bar and see what it suggests.

You can find out about many more of these at http://googlelolz.com/

My question is how in the world does a search like that get to be so popular? Or is there some back-door way to manipulate google search? Does google care or do they think it is funny? I think it's funny, but I can't imagine a professional search engine wanting to suggest such thought-provoking searches as "is there anyway i can get this popular guy to get me pregnant"

  • Solubility equilibrium question...?

The solubility-product constant for barium permanganate, Ba(MnO_4)_2 is 2.5E-10. Suppose that solid Ba(MnO_4)_2 is in equilibrium with a solution of KMnO_4. What concentration of KMnO_4 is required to establish a concentration of 2.3×10−8 M for the Ba2+ ion in solution?

  • Should I buy a mass produced laptop, or an expensive custom built one?

I'm a college student who committed the cardinal sin of owning a laptop and accidentally spilled water on my PC last week. I immediately picked it up, drained the water, took it apart, let it dry for several hours, but unfortunately it was too no avail. The computer was on when the spill occurred, and I am afraid the news could not be worse. Not only is my motherboard toast, but my hard is also dead.

So... I need some advice. I need a PC laptop that will last me at least 4 or 5 years. Reliability and longevity are top priorities, and so is performance, however only to a point... I do a little gaming, but nothing too intense - med students don't have time to play too much World of Warcraft or Half-life :(. For the most part I just do a lot of word processing and use the internet tons. I need it to be top-of-the-line enough today so that in 4-6 years will be at least usable as far as technology goes.

My question is this... do I want to spend a lot of extra money to get a custom built laptop from a reputable company that uses high-quality, commercial grade products, is upgradable, and has a great warranty package? Or is all that extra money really not worth it, and I should go with a mass produced (HP, Dell, Acer) laptop that uses more generic parts? Is the extra expense of a "fancy" computer today really going to save me money down the road, or are the major PC company products just as reliable and long-lasting?

In addition to answering my specific questions, any general computing tips and advice you can offer a poor medical student about to go into massive debt would be highly appreciated. I really can't afford to buy a new computer every 2 or 3 years right now, so I want something that will last for a long time.

  • How many people die in an average hospital in one day?

I am going to be volunteering on Saturday nights in the ER at a fairly large hospital. For any ER doctors/nurses or hospital administrators, on *average*, how many people would you say die in a normal ER at one hospital in a single day? How about in the entire hospital (including failed operations and just really sick people)? I guess I just want to know what to expect - are there really several people dying every day (like on TV), or is it more like a handful of people every week?
