  • Cash vs. Accrual Accounting for Small Businesses?

Should a Small Business with under $1,000,000 in revenue/profit use an Accrual Accounting System or a Cash Accounting system? Personally I want to lean towards an Accrual system, but being a small business means cash flow varies and I don't want to get into a cash crunch because I should have X, but the bank only reports Y if I'm using accrual.

  • Accrual Accounting and Payments Question?

Lets assume you are a small business with an accrual accounting system. When your sales team completes a "contract" sale for say $6,000/yr, but the customer will only be paying $500/mo, do you book the sale as $6,000 which is what the contract is worth even though the customer is paying monthly?

  • Starting a Nevada Business - For Internet Businesses?

If you run an internet business, you pretty much exist virtually. So why not register your business in Nevada vs. some other state? You might have some business operations elsewhere, but I don't see why your business can't be HQ'd in Nevada so you don't have to pay State Taxes.

Does anybody see any flaws with a Nevada Business entity for Internet Based Businesses?

  • If you've contracted a CPA for your Small Business, how do you use them?

Lets assume I've contracted with a CPA to handle all of my Small Business's accounting. How exactly does that process work?

Do I report bank deposits and withdraws to them? Do I report equipment purchases and sales?

Will CPAs handle accounts receivable and payable?

  • Why do you need an Accountant for a Small Business?

It makes obvious sense that you need accountants for a large business. But for a small business, why do you need an accountant vs. just using Quicken or some type of accounting software? After all, my Grand father ran a small beer distributing business and he just kept a book of numbers and didn't need an accountant.

So I'm just trying to gauge if small businesses really need to spend money on a CPA.

  • Starting a Business Means Making Others Work For You?

I'm going to throw out this scenario and you tell me if you agree to it actually working in the real world.

    --

I want to start and accounting firm which handles the accounting for small and medium sized businesses. To start, I would only have $30,000 in the bank. I would first hire a Sales Rep. with a $40,000/yr salary + Commission and a monthly quota of 3 Contracts per month. So in the first month, the rep will receive $3400/salary + whatever I decide the commission is on a sale. Lets assume each contract is worth $5,000. Should they not make their quota, they are fired at the end of the month. If they do make their contract, I'll net $15,000/mo - $3400 in salary - $500 comms., for a net profit of $11,100/mo. Then whatever work that needs to be performed, I offshore that accounting work to some firm for maybe $1000/contract. So minus another $3000 and I clear $8,100/month per Sales Rep with little if any risk to myself or my $30,000 seed money.

Does anybody think this would work? As for Overhead, I was thinking about just getting a Virtual Office for $300/mo and having the Sales Rep work from wherever since I don't need them to come into the office, just get out into the field and sell, sell, sell and fax in signed contracts.

  • Friedman v. Bernanke - The Money Supply?

Milton Friedman says when the money supply increases, inflation follows. Yet Bernanke has tripled the money supply and yet, there is no inflation. What's the problem?

I can only come up with a few reason:

    a) The CPI Data is a lie and is masking true inflation levels in America

    b) Friedman was wrong and Bernanke is able to increase the money supply without inflation.

    c) Friedman was right, we just have to wait for inflation to show up.

  • Where Are Bond Traded and Prices Reported?

I know that Bonds aren't traded on any type of market (ie: NYSE), but via interconnected bond traders at banks, hedge funds, brokers, etc... But what I'm not able to grasp is how does everybody know what the price of, say a 10yr Note, is worth if there is no central trading location for price discovery?

What I mean is, if JP Morgan buys 10yr Note from Bank of America for $98.00, how does the Morgan Stanley know their 10yr Notes are now worth $98 vs. the $99 Ask they see coming from BNY Mellon? There just seems like Bond Trading has lots of disconnects, yet somehow everybody knows the price of Bonds in the market. How is that possible without a central exchange?

  • How do you Advertise Online via random remote websites?

Help me understand how you get your company's logo/ads displayed on various websites around the world? For example, I log into my local community newspaper online and at the top of the screen is a banner for a Web Hosting Company from California. I seriously doubt that company called my local newspaper to work out an ad deal.

So in the end, whom do I setup a deal with that gives me the benefit of displaying my banner add on websites all over the region, country, world?

  • Where is the Bond Market?

I know that Stocks are mainly traded on the NYSE/NASDAQ in the US. Commodities are typically traded on the CME and ICE exchanges.

So it begs the question, where are Bonds Traded? When you hear news about the 10yr rising in price (and the yield falling) where exactly is that exchange/trade taking place? On what market is a bid finding an ask?

  • Small Business - Outsource Sales?

How much does it cost to outsource sales? Are those firms 100% commission or do they want a base salary for each sales rep they get to handle your account? I'm trying to gauge if its better to outsource sales or employ my own sales staff for a very, very, very, very small business.
