  • Linux with dial up, how can I get it to work?

In trying Ubuntu, I learned you cannot use a dial up connection as-is. Using a Lucent internal win modem, how can I get it to work? I've got XP installed on the computer also, with a working (if slow) connection.

After that, I'd need to share the connection on the two LANs I have hooked up to be shared on xp.

I'm not computer retarded, but I've never used Linux before.

Any help appreciated? Sooner the better, but details are great too.

  • What do you consider to be the absolute best anti-spyware? Least compatibility issues?

Going to put an antispyware on a second computer i'll soon have, and need one which will not cause conflict when used with antivirus programs,...(well... avast!) and want to know what I should get. Don't give me a speech about how it *can* cause issues to run two scanners or whatever at once, just *answer* if you have a *good* suggestion for an *antispyware* which *****won't cause problems ran with antivirus programs like avast!*****.

PS I'm not looking for an antivirus, but for an *antispyware* program...

  • Will DDR Ram of a different speed work in the same computer?

Will using ram that runs at PC3200 (or a variable of that ammount) in a motherboard that supports PC1600-PC2100 cause a problem? will it still run and recognize the ram and clock it at a lower speed? or will this mess up the motherboard?

  • Going to upgrade my Ram, general advice?

My computer runs extremely slow. I put in a second hard drive and split my virtual memory (it always uses a lot, 300-800, min to max) and, want to upgrade my ram to clear it up a bit. It's a very old pc to begin with, (HP 533W) but i can't really afford an entirely new computer. My computer can support a maximum of 1 gig of memory at PC2100 / PC1600

I have a 2.0GHz processor (single) and am running windows xp home.

It has 256MB DDR SDRAM, PC2100 speed right now, and has 2 (total) DIMM slots.

**Should I get and install one 1GB Ram or two 512MB ram?

*What would the difference be between a gig or 2 512s?

***Will this help my system run a bit better?

***Is my cpu going to be too slow to make a huge difference?

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was also considering upgrading my graphics card. Is that possible on my system? It has 64MB of video memory, just barely enough to run some graphic demanding programs, but not well.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

My CD RW drive is broken. I tried reseating the power and IDE cables, but its the drive. How much would a simple CD reader/writer cost? What would be the best company? How much money should i spend?

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, since i have to use dial up based on where i live (satellite lags, i can't have a lot of lag for what i use my computer for in general, despite the bandwidth issues) and i have to deal with 28.8kbps max connection speed, would that be something to upgrade my modem over to a 56kbps modem? I need a bit better bandwidth than i have now. it runs at what it says, and if i had a bit more bandwidth it'd be a lot better.

    _______________________________________________________________

    Basically, all the following questions:

    -2x512MB Ram or 1x1024MB Ram?

-What to do about my computer's graphics, to install a new card or leave it alone?

-What brand and how high of quality of a CD Reader/writer should i get(+generally not too expensive price)?

-What to do about my slow modem?

I don't really have enough money to go buying a whole new computer, so i'm upgrading what i can.

It's quite slow. It could use a bit better performance overall, and it runs games rather poorly in particular. They start fast for a moment, then sink into bad framerates. It takes quite a bit of time for most programs to open (usually 10-20 for less frequented ones, 5-10 for more used ones) I usually end up using about 300-700 MB of Virtual memory (from idle to multiple resource hog programs)

I don't have a whole lot of money to go out spending on new hardware, if you offer hardware reccomendations, offer some software advice as well.

So, ways to help my computer run a bit better? What should i do about the IRQL conflict?

    ?

  • I have 3 IRQs being shared, takes up about 20% cpu when idle, (read)?

    IRQ 0 System timer OK

IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard OK

IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM1) OK

IRQ 6 Standard floppy disk controller OK

IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK

IRQ 12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse OK

IRQ 13 Numeric data processor OK

IRQ 14 Primary IDE Channel OK

IRQ 15 Secondary IDE Channel OK

    IRQ 16 Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller OK

    IRQ 16 Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2 OK

IRQ 17 Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC OK

IRQ 17 Realtek AC'97 Audio OK

    IRQ 18 Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7 OK

    IRQ 19 Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4 OK

IRQ 22 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System OK

    IRQ 23 Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD OK

IRQ 23 Agere Win Modem OK

    (16, 17, 23)

They all say OK, but process explorer says interrupts are taking about 12-20% of my cpu consistently when my computer is idle. Which ones should i change to what new IRQs, if any? (also, other advice related to it is appreciated)

  • Virus found with avast! inside 2 files marked as OS files.?

I scanned with avast! and it found 2 files in system32 folder, which have viruses inside them. The 2 files were marked OS files, but had a creation date of about the time i'd have gotten them.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\getipowi.exe\sisa.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winonamo.exe\sisa.exe

They're in the files getipowi.exe and winonamo.exe, when i looked myself (unhid OS files) i saw them both there. Don't really know if they even are part of Windows, but, i'd rather get more information on them.

I cannot quarantine either sisa.exe from them. I'd rather not delete until i know what they are.

Info on what they are and how to remove please?

  • What is yosutihe.exe and what affects does it have, is it safe to remove, and what virus is it part of (if is)?

Alright. First off, i 'kind of' know how i got it, and am now avoiding the source of it, but that's not the point. I believe it's a virus, (caught several recently)... I removed infected files (quarantined, avast!) several times, and they usually ended up being about the same ones. I looked it up, and only found information about .dll yosutihe files, with only 3 mentions of the .exe, all being quotes from hijackthis. I found it in a bootscan, and can't find it otherwise.

    [Now my question(s)]

Is this file a part of windows?

    Is it safe to remove?

What affects does it have on windows?

What affects does it have when removed?

Does it regenerate other infected files upon removal [of SOME]

What file (if any) does it create besides yosutihe.exe?

Will removing this cause the others to cease re-creating themselves?

Will removing this completely get rid of it?

  • Virus infected friend's computer, blocks most programs?

Ok. Her computer got a virus from whoknowswhere, and it blocks things. Tried task manager, its disabled. tried regedit, its disabled. tried msconfig, its disabled. tried a web browser, its disabled. tried to open command prompt, its disabled. tried OPENING A FOLDER, it closed.

Does anyone have an idea, as im sure with all that taken care of, the virus is bound to be blocking installations.

She also said she tried scanning with a microsoft antivirus, it found nothing.

  • What if... now hear me out in my question details.?

Alright. Let us think a minute about where we are in space and time. Imagine, for every action we make, a Parallel dimension branches out from the time-line. For example, a man flips a coin. In one off-branch of this action, it turns out heads, in the other, tails. The line splits into 2 off-sections which then continue branching out with every action. The only difference between the two time-line splits, is the head of the coin. (or tail). From the beginning of time, imagine if this has been happening for every instant of time and every action in every instant. And that if this were true, there would be uncountable unfathomable numbers of paradox universes in existence. Let's say you have a choice of very big life-altering circumstances. What choice you make branches off into a new offspring, while the other one, in another dimension, splits off as well in the same place, and from there, every thing that were to be different is, making the time-lines totally different.

Knowing all this, if one were to know about all of those dimensions, to even glance into them (through some unknown phenomenon), they would instantly go insane, their mind would be most likely be destroyed, and would also instantly die, (sounds weird, but...) because of the sheer amount of knowledge gained.

So, post in, what do you think?

Remember, there is nothing to prove it. But, there's also nothing to disprove it.

Do you think its POSSIBLE? Do you think i'm full of bologna? What views do you have on it? What thoughts does this bring out?

  • NewDotNet Virus Effects?

What can the NewDotNet virus do? Is it able to disable Windows Firewall?

I recently downloaded, installed, and scanned with SUPER Antivirus. It found several registry keys for NewDotNet. I had disabled it attempting to find it on startup, which when i got this [used, data still on it] computer it was no longer installed. [not completely anyway]

Each startup it would say something like run dll error could not open NEWDOT~1 NEWDOT~2.dll

A few months ago, i looked it up and found it wasn't a good thing to have, so i disabled the startup attempts to open it. [open the nonexistant (seemingly uninstalled) parts]

    [to present]

I always had a problem with Windows Firewall. It wouldn't be accessible with the message that it needed to start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing wizard. Which, when i clicked to, it couldn't. Tried to manually 'run' it and start it from services from control panel, neither worked. After removing the registry entries for NewDotNet, it just started working after a boot-up.

Back to question... Can NewDotNet disable Windows Firewall? And what other effects does it have on computer?

PS: Sorry for lengthy question >.>
