My love of fish and helping others with their fish leads me to this board to help others in any way I can. I do not judge people, or "point fingers", however, I can't urge people enough to become knowledgeable about any pet they are interested in PRIOR to purchasing it. So so many pets pay the ultimate price because the owners don't take the time to become educated about that pet, be it fish, dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. So much needless suffering could be ended through research. Fish are not just "put water in the tank and add fish". There is so much more involved. If you do not know how to properly set up a tank and care for the fish you want to get, then research this prior to getting them. It is SO SO important! • Children and Fish Food?

Ok, so, I just wanted to let everyone know that if your 21 mo. old (or any age child) happens to dump your fish food all over the ground and you don't know if they ingested any or not(ewwww), it WILL NOT harm them OR turn them in to fish (lol now, but wasn't funny at the time)!!

I ALWAYS keep my fish supplies locked up and out of the way, but for some reason I mistakenly left the flakes out on the table today. Needless to say, my 21 month old got the container, opened it, and dusted my floor with the entire contents, JEEZE!!!! I called poison control just in case she ate any (which it didn't appear she did, but rather be safe then sorry), and they advised that she'd be fine if she did ingest some, just to rinse her mouth out. If she sprouts gills and needs to be kept in the bathtub, I'll make sure I update this to let you know!!

This was a lesson well learned, and I just wanted to share this to let people know, because "accidents" do happen no matter how careful you are.

  • Bio Wheel Filters?

Ok, I'm looking for people who either have a bio wheel filter, or had one, and their opinions of same. I'm trying to make a decision whether to switch or not, but i'm beginning to think that it's more of a "what you prefer" type of thing. Please give me your thoughts on it. If you do not have one, or aren't familiar with them, no offense, but please don't bother to leave an answer (i.e. "I've heard about them but never used or saw one", etc.) Thanks all!!! ;o)

  • Can you identify?

Ok everyone. I pulled a plastic lilly pad out of my pond yesterday and it had these "things" all over it. They did not appear to move at all, but they were all over it. Can anyone identify what these may be? I'm curious if anyone can come up with an answer. Thanks. ;o)

  • Coloring of koi/goldfish??

We have 3 koi and 3 large goldfish in our outside pond. After a thorough cleaning (the occupants were transferred to another pond for), we discovered that we had "babies". We had no idea that the fish spawned, and never even had given the possibility of it happening a second thought (still not quite sure why, lol). My question is this: We were able to rescue only 2 fry (sadly), which I'm happy to report are now thriving in an indoor aquarium (for time being and growth). We do not know if these are goldfish fry or koi fry, and are not sure how to tell. They do not have the classic koi "whiskers" and are a silvery color....very plain looking. Do they start out like this and change as they mature, or can we be pretty sure that they are goldfish, but not orange?? I would be happy to send a pic to anyone who might be able to help us out. I've been all over the internet trying to get answers to our questions, but have come up empty handed. Any thoughts anyone? Please? Thanks!!
