  • Identify a novel regarding multiple universes?

I remember reading a book years ago that I would like to track down. I think the title was maybe a single word, with some connotation to hell? In it a Jew disappears from a concentration camp. We learn that he had learnt the secret to moving between universes. But each universe has a different balance of good and evil. "Our" universe is balanced, some are much better, some are more evil. Multiple character stories exist as they explore the universes and come together at the end....

  • Please identify a sci-fi novel?

Very vague recollections but what I can remember:

A space opera, more of a parody.

Two males (teens?), very clever (there is a reference to them squaring the circle) build a spaceship. At the end they become a couple...?

  • What do I do about this girl (my ex)??

I'll try to keep this short, but I cannot wait to hear answers!

Work in a place with a girl who until Sep last year was engaged. We never did anything at that time, although we both liked each other. She called the wedding off (nothing to do with me!!!!) and soon after we got together. All should be good, but we fell out a few times over stupid stuff. We got to summer this year and she decided that she had never "mourned" the old relationship; she went from one to another. We spent time apart, but stayed close and in the last few months have just been going on dates and stuff. Fell out again last week as she has some crazy jealousy stuff going on (I spoke to a girl at work and now she thinks I want her to leave her husband!!!). I can't seem to convince her that I only want her, and have only wanted her. Things still a bit frosty after the weekend argument, but we are still talking. It just seems like we are going nowhere. Been 6 months since she needed some space to mourn, and even though at times we "act" like we're together we are in a rut.

Not really a question as such, but what the hell do you guys think? Any ideas on how to improve matters??

  • Clever wordplay from cleverer people?

So, I want to write a good luck card for a close friend who is about to start a tough course. I like to put a lot of effort into my messages but I'm no Jonathan Nolan (he's a watchful protector, a silent guardian, a Dark Knight!) although that's my dramatic style of writing.

But how do you write an amazing good luck message?? All I have so far is

As always, there's no need to say good luck to you.

Good luck is just a residue of preparation; the outcome of persistence. And if there's one thing you have more of than anyone in this world, it's sheer determination. I know, I've seen it.

Remember, the best luck happens to those that don't need it.

And after your self-study, you don't need it.

Even when you don't see it, know that I'm behind you all the way.

  • Letter to ex's parents - good idea?

Hi all, just wonder what you think about this. My ex and I split quite recently, over something fairly small and stupid. It's happened in the past - almost a year ago - and we managed to get back together. I really, really hope we can reconcile, but in the event we can't I'm thinking of sending her parents a note to let them know how much I care for her. They've always been very accommodating and friendly with me so it seems like the respectful thing to do. I don't want it to appear a backdoor tactic to get back with her; an ex of mine from a few years ago who was close to my mum did the same thing. We didn't get back together but my mum has always appreciated her doing it.

Does it seem like a good idea. I won't use it to ask them to do anything on my behalf! Just want them to know my feelings.

    Cheers

  • Appreciate your views?

So, about 3 months ago, on my friend's stag night, I met a girl who had literally just come out of a 4 year relationship. We hit it off, had a fun night (although she wasn't looking for another man!), swapped numbers and kept in touch. She lives about 200 miles away so it's not like we can see each other all the time. We talked almost every day, and managed to see each other a few times too. Basically we got very close. But, we both knew her situation and never wanted anything complicated to happen. Sadly we fell for each other and when you've just come out of a painful breakup the last thing you want is to go straight into another one. So I agreed to give her space, either to forget about me or to get over the ex. It's killing me every day not to talk to her (I'm not texting or calling, to try to minimise the complication) but I still feel very strongly for her.

So far, it's been a week, which doesn't sound long, but then we've only known each other for about 12 anyway, so it's suddenly a large percentage.

Just wondered if you all think leaving her be is the best thing. The last thing I want is to hound her and scare her off, but do you think she'll ever put the ex behind her and come back to me?

  • 90s TV police comedy name?

I remember a TV sitcom about a police station, airing in approx. 1992/1993. I think it may have been set in America. I also think the senior officer was a black actor. The only thing I remember was the theme tune was "come on and rescue me".

    Can ANYONE name this programme????

  • Fiction novel about an astronomer?

I read a novel fairly recently (last few years) about an astronomer tasked to investigate whether an asteroid will strike Earth. Think the asteroid is named Wormwood, but not sure. He uncovers a conspiracy, using the cover of an asteroid strike to start a war. It was quite technical, so probably written by a hard sci-fi autghor or an astronomer. Would love to track it down if anyone can tell me its name/author!

  • SMS alerts for incoming mail?

With my Yahoo UK email account, is it possible to get SMS alerts when I receive new mail? I do not needthe mail pushed to me (so no WAP or online capability needed), just an SMS to tell me I have new mail. Yahoo UK has Mail for Mobile, to actually read emails, but this is above and beyond what I need!
