  • Does the Americans With Disabilities Act cover temporary disabilities? ?

A friend of mine is having foot surgery and has to be off her feet for 8-10 weeks. She is a cashier at a gift shop. Her employer's policy is employees do not sit down during their shift. She could continue to work if her employer would allow her to sit on a stool, but they refuse to make an accommodation. Does this violate The Americans with Disabilities Act?

  • This time of year I am asked for so many contributions to charity?

One of my friends is asking for shampoo, soap, etc to make hygiene bags for the homeless, someone else needs food for needy families, another person needs toys for children, and another needs baby items for young parents. They are all very worthy causes, but we just can't support every charity in need, How can I say no without feeling guilty?

  • If a person received a dishonorable discharge from the military, would there be a,record of their service?

I am researching family history. I was told one relative was in the U. S. Army but was 'kicked out' due to behavior problems. There are no records of his time in the army.

  • Are free refills/self serve soft drinks available all over?

If you go to a fast food place in NYC, Chicago, or other city, do you get your own drink or do the counter servers get it for you? Most fast food places in the southern part of the USA you are given an empty cup and you get your own drink and you can get as many refills as you want. A friend of mine went to NYC and no place offered free refills where she ate.

  • Should he cash the check?

A very sweet friend of mine gave my son a $25.00 check for a graduation gift. He has not deposited it or cashed it yet.I found out a couple days ago, money is very tight for her and she may not have enough in he account to cover the check. If my son does cash it, both of them could have service fees (banks charge the person cashing the check fees too when the check bounces) I don't want to embarrass her. I'm thinking of even saying I accidentally washed his jeans and the check was in the pocket just to save her from embarrassment. She is such a sweet lady but has had some unexpected expenses lately.

  • A polite way to say leave your kid at home?

A group of friends and I get together for monthly lunches or breakfast. One of the women has an 8 y/o that is a spoiled brat. He has nver been told no and talks constantly and won't sit still. Now taht he is out of school, she'll bringhim. It will be almost impossible to have a conversation. A few of us really do not want him there. Can we tell her to get a sitter?

  • Poor kid-so lonely due to mom's fears?

I am reading about a little girl on another site. She is home schooled, but her parents do not allow her to participate in any home school groups, Girl Scouts, church groups, etc. The poor child is isolated with no friends. It seems the mom has some fear/paranoia about any outside activity for the child. Perhaps the mom had a bad experince in the past. So, the child has no friends or activities.

  • I don't want to keep buyung?

A friend of mine sells cleaning/personal care products. While I like the products, I find them to be more expensive than what I can buy at local stores. For example, a bottle of vitamins with her company costs 24.50 for 90 vitamins, plus shipping. I can get a bottle of 200 at Wal-mart for $7.61.Withe her company, I can get a discount, but it requires a monthly minimum purchase of about $60.00-$75.00 worth of products. I simply do not use enough of the products to buy that much. For example, I don't do 90 loads of laundry a month. I know she is trying to help support her family, but i can't justify paying as much as 4 times for a product I hate to keep saying no. As I said, i like the products, just not having a buy a certain amount each month.

  • Dining out with coupons?

When s customer uses a coupon such as buy one get one free at a restaurant, does it affect the quality and quantity of the food served? Often it will state on the coupon 'present coupon when ordering' On one occasion we were using a coupon for buy one get one free and I ordered a baked potato and was told they were out. However, I saw other customers served baked potatos after we were served.

  • Why do we say "smells of" instead of smells like?

If we feel soft fabric, we say it feels LIKE silk.

If we taste a creamy dessert, we say it tastes like ice cream

If we hear a rumbling sound, we say it sounds LIKE thunder

If we see a furry animal, we say it looks like a kitten.

Yet, when we smell burning leaves, we say it smells OF smoke, not like smoke.

  • What do I say in this situation?

A friend of mine has a son that is good friends with my son. It looks like her son "Danny" will not be passing school this year. Mostly due to the fact he does not study, pay attention in class or complete homework assignments, he will be repeating the 10th grade. Danny is very capable of doing the work-no learning disability, handicap etc.

How do I handle my son and Danny's other friends moving on in a compassionate way?

  • Difficult co-worker-How can I cope?

I will be helping at a summer program for children at a church. I will be helping prepare and serve meals. The lady that is in charge of the food service is very hard to work with. She has to make very decision, even the most simple ones like which plate to put the cheese on or which flavor of Kool-aide to serve that day. If I do something on my own, she gets upset and redoes it. So I have to ask about every little thing-grape or cherry Kool-aide? Where should I put the cheese crackers?

She works at a school program for mentally challenged young adults, so she is in a situation where she does have to tell her students exactly how to do every thing and they do need close supervision, but I don't need to be told how to make Kool-aide everyday. How can I tactfully tell her to let me do somethings on my own?

  • Difficult "co-volunteer"?

In a couple weeks, I will be volunteering at a church event where I will be helping serve meals. The lady in in charge is VERY hard to work with. She HAS to make every decision, even the most simple ones such as which plate to put the cheese on or where to put the napkins. If I do anything on my own, she gets upset and makes me change it or changes it herself, so I have to ask before I do anything.

She works with mentally challenged young adults, so she is in an environment where they have to be told how and when to do everything and have to be closely observed, but I don't need such scrutiny.

A few people just won't work with her anymore.

How would you handle her..remember, it is a church event lasting several days.
