  • Do I have an Allergy or Food Intolerance?

Whenever I have ingested nuts (cashews, pistachio, pesto sauce (not sure what type of nut this is uses) ) - I have had varying reactions

    Some of these, include

    -Vomiting

    -Tingling Mouth

    -Runny nose

    -Itchy Eyes

But my life has never, ever been in danger. Also, I am able to eat products that 'may contain traces of nuts', and on one occasion, I bit into an m&m that happened to be one of those peanut m&m's. I was able to spit it out before actually digesting it though, and after washing my mouth out throroughly, didn't recieve any of the reactions stated beforehand, except for a slight tingling in the mouth.

Anyway, I am wondering, because after doing some reading on the comparison of nut allergies to food intolerance, my reactions seem to closer match allergies, but apparently, allergies are almost always 'life threatening', which hasn't been the case for me.

Also, I have never had problem with Nutella, or any other hazelnut spreads

  • Why do I have no understanding of math whatsoever?

I am able to do well on a 'skills' test via practice, but this really isn't testing my math brain, it's just making sure I know formulas, processes and whatnot.

When it comes to application questions, questions that could actually be useful in real life, I just can't invision anything in my head.

Atm, I am doing application problems for quadratics, and while my classmates seem so easily to be able to just look at a word problem and apply all the necessary formulas and processes which they had to find for themselves, I just...can't.

It's extremely frustrating, and i'm not sure how I can do well on application tests, where you need to actually use your math brain.

  • How would you go about answering these Quadratic Application Problems?

I have a test in a few days on Quadratic Application Problems, and am having some trouble. I would like some explaining on some of these questions, so I can more clearly get my head around this kind of thing.

How would you go about solving:

A piece of wire 200cm long is to be bent to form a rectangle. Let 'x' cms be the length of the rectangle, and let 'y' cms be the width.

Q1) Find the area, (A cm^2), of the rectangle in terms of x

Q2) Find the maimum area and the value of 'x' for which this occurs

  • How to find the the values p for 'x' solution/s?

    Consider the quadratic equation 2px2 + (p – 1)x + 2p = 0.

a Find the values of p for which there are 2 solutions.

b Find the values of p for which there are no solutions.

c Find the value of p for which there is 1 solution.

I am having some trouble with this question.

How would you go about answering it?

  • Say you were standing in the Southern Hemisphere, looking to the south, with no obstructions...?

I know that light from a source reaches your eye, (which of course allows us to see objects from astounding distances like stars), but with the curveture of the Earth, it is only possible to see a certain distance, before a horizon.

So if you were to be placed in an environment of no obstructions whatsoever, would this mean that the horizon to the South would be farther away from you in the Southern Hemisphere, and the horizon to the North be farther away in the Northern Hemisphere?

  • I am 15 and 5ft4, How tall will I be when I reach my full adult height?

I am 5ft4, at 15 years old. I think I may be a late bloomer, as my voice has not yet cracked, and in general, I just look a lot younger than all of the boys in my class.

My dad is 5ft11, and my mum is 6ft.

My grandparents on my dad's side, and my grandma on my mum's side are about average height for their respective genders, but my grandpa on my mum's side, is about 6ft5.

I calculated my height on a height calculator on the net, it predicted that I would be about 5ft11, but it does not take into account what stage of puberty one is at.

Based on this info, would anyone with knowledge on this area be able to predict my height? Or at least a late bloomer who was a similar height to me, tell me their progress in height?

  • I'm 15 but seemingly have the characteristics of a 12 year old?

I am at the time of my life, where I should be going through some rapid changes, but it's almost like I am growing at snail pace, and it's driving me insane.

My voice is still quite high pitched, albeit not as high as when I was younger, but not as low as you would think a 15 year old should be at. I'm sure if you were to hear my voice and not see my face, you would think I was a 12 year old.

I am about 151cm (4ft9), and 44kg (97lb) even though I DO eat a large amount of food. I do recgonise that I have a fast metabolism, and am an ectomorph, but the rules of puberty should tell that I should be growing taller..at least.

I have only started getting some thin armpit hairs, and my chest i've noticed has potruded out by the tiniest of margins. It's still not enough.

My penis is about 9.5cm long (just under 4inch) when erect, way under the usual average for my age?

To top it all off, people always think I am younger than I am, which I guess is expected. For example, my hairdresser today when asking what year I was in, sounded shocked to learn that I was in Year 9, and that I was 15. He then told me than I looked alot younger than I was. All my friends look their age, but I ******* don't.

I know that if I was to reach the age of 30 and look 25, I would be happy, but this is different. I don't want to look like a little kid anymore, I want to grow up, have a sense of dominance, not be looked down on by everyone else, and at least be taken seriously. It upsets me, when I see kids even younger than me, who are bigger and older looking than me, and they look their respectable age.

I guess the question I am asking, is what stage of puberty I am in? When can I at least expect to start seeing some more rapid changes? Is this normal?

  • Short Figurative Cold War Piece?

OK, so my YEAR 10 class has been set out a task in English, to write a short (200-300 word) piece, on a politically-war related topic from the 20th Century. It needs to be written in more figurative language aswell, (although literal language can be used at some points).

Here is the passage I have prepared, I would just like to know if there are any edits you think I could make:

A chilling breeze raced over the desolate wastelands, uninterrupted, like a speeding car does on a freeway. Over a rugged fence, only a few acres away, sat an impatiently waiting, metallic figure, of monstrous proportions. It's time was nearing, and it soon became apparent, that that single chilling breeze, would be the last touch of a familiar friend, for this metallic figure. Thousands of kilometres of the way, sat a very different figure. Seargent Alexei Sokolov, awaited impatiently, in the man made hug of a heated room. As the fingers' of Alexei drummed against the pinewood desk, it soom became apparent, that these pecks of the wood, may be the last feelings of a familiar friend, for these fingers'.

Suddenly, the whimper of a petrified computer was heard. Alexei's eyes lit up, but his fingers' seemed to cry, as they were lifted off the familiar pinewood desk. Their flashed the message, the message that mother nature had been dreading, the cold message of death. Alexei dragged his arm over to the button, with his body trembling with excitement and nerves, as if seeming to believe that it was about to conquer the terrifying heights of a rollercoaster. As he brought his arm down on the button, his fingers' seemed to resist, as if they were the only body parts who had not been swayed by the cold mind of a war induced seargent. The fingers' stood no chance.

A life of waiting, had finally ended. Like an adrenalin induced beast, the metallic figure roared into life. The sound of the cold breeze, had for the first time, been cut out. The land seemed to quiver with fear, as the figure excitedly sped into the sky. Thousands of kilometres away, lay the enemy, seemingly unprepared, for the figure. Suddenly, it happened. A gaping wound, opened up in the earth, like a knee, which had encountered a fall. A chilling breeze raced over what seemed like a desolate wasteland. The Cold War had begun.

*SIDENOTE*: This is not meant to be an accurate representation of the Cold War. I am aware that the Cold War never actually began, but I thought it could be interesting to try out writing a passage of it starting anyway :)

  • Did I fail my Grade 4 Piano Exam?

Earlier today, I completed my 4th grade AMEB piano exam in Melbourne, Australia.

I was pretty damn nervous, and just wanted to know if any of you think I may have failed it?

    Scales:

I was first asked to play B flat major. At this point, I was pretty much shaking, and completely fucked it up. Didn't even know what I was doing. I restarted, and played OK.

I was asked to play a few more scales, in which I either didn't play in a consistent tempo, or made a small mistake.

I did however, play my appregios and contrary motion scales very well, which was surprising, since those are normally my weaker scales.

    Main pieces:

My first piece I played pretty well and consistently, albeit for a few minor mistakes. My second was decent enough aswell, while my third I didn't play fast enough. A collective problem for all 3 main pieces was my dynamics though. For some reason I wasn't able to differentiate too much between piano and forte.

    Extra Piece:

Made a few mistakes, played worse than main pieces, even though it was an easier song.

    General Knowledge:

Some of the signs on the actual music I wasn't even taught, so couldn't answer, but I had no problem with info about the actual piece and the key signatures etc.

    Sight Reading:

Sight Reading, quite understandably I believe, has always been my weakness. I did practice a little more for it prior to the exam than previous exams, and it resulted in me actually being able to complete the music with relatively little problem, (didn't stop or have to restart at any point) but played in a very slow tempo.

    Aural:

Cannot be exactly sure, as obviously the examiners don't tell correct you, but I know that I performed awful on the part where you need to figure out the distance between one note to the other (well, judging on the examiners body language anyway), but I do know I performed well on the clapback, and the part where you need to hum the lower, higher, or middle note in a chord. (The examiner even complimented me on my pitch, suggesting that I should get into singing).

As for the examiner, (if their mood in anyway affects the marks), he seemed to be in a pretty good mood, and was generally a very nice older man.

In all my previous exams, I have always reached pretty much the highest marks, but I was never as nervous before the exam as I was today.

    What do you think?
