1 AnswerBotany1 decade agoStatistics: 2 way ANOVA? How to structure the analysis?
I'm performing an experiment in which insects are infected with a disease (2 strains of innoculant) and treated with 4 treatment plus a control. Additionally there are 2 uninfected control cages. Each cage contains 180 insects. I'm considering each insect a replicate. I'm measuring efficacy of treatment by longevity of insects. (Bug 1 lives 7days; bug 2 lives 12 days; bugs 3-6 survived) At the end of the experiment many insects will be left alive. I'm not sure how to analyze the statistics. can anyone help me?
1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agoWhy does brownian motion happen in some particles but not others?
A test for american foulbrood in honey bees uses the presence or absence of brownian motion in spores as a diagnostic. Why does this happen in some spores but not others?
FYI:
Modified hanging-drop technique
The modified hanging-drop technique (21) can be done directly on larval remains. However, due to its low specificity this technique is not conclusive.
Suspect material is mixed with water, and a drop of this suspension is placed on a cover-slip, dried and fixed by heat, and stained with carbol fuchsin or a suitable spore stain for 30 seconds. Any excess stain is washed off with water. While the preparation is still wet, the cover-slip is inverted on to a slide on which there is a very thin layer of immersion oil. Excess water will emerge. The slide is gently blotted dry and examined by high-power microscopy. By examining fields where pockets of water have formed in the oil, the spores of P. l. larvae will be seen exhibiting Brownian movement. Spores from other bacilli often remain fixed; in addition this technique allows the microscopic examination of the characteristic morphology of the foulbrood spores. If the infection is under 10 days old, long vegetative forms of the bacterium are present and some newly formed spores may be seen (24)."
1 AnswerPhysics1 decade agoMy friend is an atheist raised Jewish by a Catholic (no bat mitzvah). Would you consider this person Jewish?
My friends father is a Jew; but he's an Atheist and doesn't approve of religion. Her mother is catholic but wanted her to be raised with some religion. Her mother wanted to include the father in some way so this young woman was raised Jewish. She never became a bat mitzvah and is atheist now but considers herself a jew. In fact she gets pretty irate when people quote a bunch of stuffy rules to tell her she's not. What do you think?
13 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoDoes anyone know of any young earth geologists?
About 10 years ago I read about a geology professor (probably employed by a Christian university) who was determined to expose the holes in contemporary geologic theory and produce evidence the earth is far younger than currently thought. Of course this person faded away, and his students presumably came to their senses but I can’t remember what this dudes name was. Does anyone know whom I’m talking about? I think there has been more than one legitimate (though perhaps deluded) geologist who tried to advance young earth theory. Does anyone know any of these people’s names or what became of them?
7 AnswersEarth Sciences & Geology1 decade agoMy new girlfriend likes murder mystery novels. Can you recomend some good authors?
She particularly likes agatha christie but I have a feeling she's already read all of those books. What are some similar authors in the mystery genera that are less well known? Better yet did A.C. write any books under a pseudonym? Thank you!

Has a causal relationship been established between CO2 presence and global temperature? I know there is a strong correlation between CO2 and temperature as observed in the last 50 years but is there any data than proves that connection isn’t spurious? Please tell me in your own words; I’m not interested in links, I can use google too. Thank you!

1 AnswerChemistry1 decade agoWhen negotiating payment with a hospital, will they require access to my financial records?
Will a hospital make me sign something giving them access to financial records like bank accounts and my tax return?
It seems likely my claim for recent treatment will be denied. I’ll likely owe between $10k and $15k. I made only $18k last year so I think be in a good position to bargain. However, I have made more money in the past and I do have assets. If they look at my tax return they’ll know I’m not as destitute as my pay stubs imply. This may make it more difficult to negotiate reasonable payment. Before I belly up to the bargaining table I need to be prepared. Does any one know if they’ll require access to my financial records before they’ll cut me a deal? Also what’s a good way to know how much I should pay for treatment (what’s a good deal?)?
