  • Is Taiwanese machinery automatically better then Chinese?

For instance someone near me has a very early Taiwanese version of the common 7" x 10" mini lathe sold by Harbor Freight, Grizzly, etc. It's so old the tailstock engages differently with the bed. It doesn't have an integral motor per se, unless it was modified, there's a longish belt and the motor sits under a table. Did the Taiwanese get into this stuff before the Chinese? Some of the early Chinese lathes going back to the 80s were said to have very soft castings. Would I likely have those and other problems with a lathe that old (and I'm not talking about old American/European/Japanese/etc. lathes). Old is often but not always bettter.

  • Can an oversized block of aluminum function as a heatsink?

For a microprocessor. The dimensions of the block are at least 2.5x that of a typical heatsink. This is a dual socket 370 Pentium III (1.33ghz) server board. But I ask as a general principle. I could add dedicated fans, if seemed necessary. Shouldn't a large block be able to absorb a lot of heat?

  • Determining internal state of engine.?

Recently noticed yellow custard and moisture on oil filler cap. 1998 Grand Prix GT, 3.8L. non super. I'm inclined to suspect plastic upper intake, but don't want to bother changing it before determining if crankshaft/bearings are chewed up due to coolant getting into crankcase. No custard on dipstick, yet. I had a problem and let an oil change go for 6000 miles. Could I strain the old oil, have just changed it. Or drain new oil, less then 100 miles on that, to look for flecks of metal? Is that the way to determine if engine will need overhaul? How fine a screen would you need to see whatever needs to be seen?

  • 1998 Grand Prix GT oil drain plug?

does anyone have *specific* knowledge whether a stripped out drain plug bolt (actually the hole is stripped) can be repaired by using a longer standard bolt with the same thread? yes I realize the bolt will need to be cut down some and chamfered.

  • Series III aluminum upper intake on series II 3800?

I know there are adapters. But could this be mated to the car with duct tape as a temporary affair? What about using a makeshift wooden adapter (and tape if necessary). Also as a temporary affair.

  • just replaced my circulating pump. Now boiler floods garage when thermostat switches off.?

there's a copper tube that has some sort of pop valve. well it popped and a few gallons of water came out after thermostat shut off. i unpopped it, but it still drizzles. I'm thinking a 5 gallon pale would fill up in an few hours, maybe sooner. the heater had been down for over a month. what might be the problem? thanks in advance.

i think but am not positive that tube only started pouring after boiler switched off.

  • is it possible to move a minivan with 1 or more 1/4 h.p motors?

Bolted to the underside of the chassis say. Could pulleys turned from wood facilitate this. or would metal pulleys be necessary? And what would the ration be?

  • How high does a 2001 Chevy venture need to be raised to remove fuel tank?

It's the shorty version. Could this be done in a garage with an 8' ceiling?

If not could the floor be cut away to lift it out, as vehicle is being scrapped anyway. Tia.

  • Is it legal (in NJ) to move a person's belongings to a different part of a house w/o their consent?

My deranged oldet sister lives in what used to be my mother's house. I moved in to take care of the bills (a little over 3 years ago) and told her she could move in, which she did 33 days later. She pulled all her garbage out of storage and dumped it in the middle of the garage. My stuff is also in there, but it's situated such that a vehicle could be parked. But her crappola is in the way. In fact I was the one that had to arrange her stuff somewhat in order to be able to move around in there. Now I have to push a disabled vehicle in there. Can I move her stuff into an adjacent room? Do I need her consent? I don't care what's polite, I just need to know if I'm encroaching on her rights in anyway. I'll treat her junk with respect. But it might be crammed in somewhat as that room (a den) is only the size of a small bedroom.

  • Approximate value of parts from a 2001 Chevy Venture minivan (blown engine)?

I live in NJ. The doors have value, perhaps upwards of 500$ maybe?. Is it likely significant value could be found in what's left? Some engine parts are ok, but the emgine shakes violently when you attempt to start it.

  • 1998 Grand Prix GT, ALL dash, center console and headlights flicker/flash or die, then come back on ... ?

Not the fog lamp(s), nor the "trac off" or "service engine soon" lights were affected. Heads up display was unaffected. Radio, clock, environmental lamps were affected, but radio still played music. This was at speeds of 35 - 45 miles an hour. When I got home, voltage across battery was 13.82 volts. I suppose it still could be the alternator dying, battery is a few weeks old, Diehard Silver. Just don't understand how those lamps are all wired together somehow.

  • Does the integrates graphics of a  Celeron G3930 need to be disabled in order to see output from a GPU?

I have a Zotac b150 mining motherboard. Someone gave me an old EVGA GTX 260 Core 216. I plug it in, nothing. The Zotac has to have an HDMI connection to a monitor or it won't boot (maybe the DVI connection wpuld work if the card is functional, can't say). So I plug in 1 monitor via HDMI (motherboard connector) and a seperate monitor connected to the GPU (DVI). Nothing.

Do I need to do something in the bios to disable integrated graphics. Or do I need to install drivers for the gpu (that is after I install an os)?

  • 4 or 5 nights a week I have 2 lbs. of veggies for dinner, and some butter. How much should I likely lose per week?

About 1/3 stick of butter. Mostly peas ans broccoli the past few nights. I only eat twice a day, been eating beans and chili for lunch. And a bag of microwaved popcorn. 1 big 32 oz. iced coffee. Will I likely see ~2 lbs. a week disappear?

Sure I need to vary which veggies I consume. In time ...

  • Mama cat lost interest in food 3 weeks after birth?

She was eating very heartily until about yesterday. Through last night and today she barely touches her food. Nothing about her has changed, kittens are strong and healthy. Is this just temporary? Should I try yet more flavors of food.

For nearly a week she would gobble 3 cans of food a day. Could she just be stuffed?

  • I found a baby box turtle while weed wacking ...?

I've had him in a plastic tub for a week. I'm pretty intent on keeping him as there are so many cats and falcons/hawks around here I doubt he would survive. I would love to just let him loose in the garden. But that is getting torn up soon as it's just overgrown weeds at this point. I need helpful suggestions. When he's big enough I could let him loose. I wold like to build a habitat for thw time being.

  • Is it legal in any state to arrest someone for refusing to provide identification?

While on foot, not operating a vehicle. No actual crime was reported, just a frivolous report of a "suspicious" person walking down a country road, Ok if you have to know which state I'm referring to, it's ****ing New Jersey.
