Whats with the Wedding Cake?

Mostly for good luck

"The Wedding Cake was originally lots of little wheat cakes that were broken over the Bride's head to bring good luck and fertility. Every guest then eats a crumb to ensure good luck. Sleeping with a piece under her pillow is said to make a single woman dream of her future husband."

I guess it is based mostly on tradition, and like many parts of a wedding, tradition is the ruling force. (ie white dress, garder, bridesmaids dressed as clones, "Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue.")

I was recently at a wedding that broke away from the tradition of having a wedding cake. Instead of a cake, they had a chocolate fountain and all of the fixings for dipping (strawberries, pieces of sponge cake, wafer cookies, cheesecake bits.) The chocolate fountain was a HUGE hit with all of the guests. Because this couple decided to do something different, people will always remember their wedding as something more special than the rest.

I think it's just tradition. We had cheesecake and it was a huge hit. I don't really like bakery cake. It's too sugary and it's always dry at weddings. My mother-in-law had a level 3 temper tantrum when told her we weren't having cake. She thought all our guests would leave once they found out there would be cheesecake instead of cake. But they didn't, we got tons of compliments! As long as you provide something sweet after dinner, people will be happy!

I refused to have "fru-fru" food or a cake that was dry. Our food and cake rocked! And all our guests went home feeling like stuffed turkies! Except for us, of course. We were too busy socializing to eat our food. We ordered a pizza and they lied..they were pounding on the motel room door 15 minutes after we called! and they told us 45 minutes!!!! (oh...probably more than you wanted to know)

It's really ment to be broke and crumbled over the bides head while she's being carried over the thrushold. It's to bring good luck, wealth and many children.

well for me, its just tradition.. part of wedding tradition which then catch up the attention of guests and they say its the center piece for weddings.

IS THE SAME AS A BIRTHDAY CAKE, ITS TO CELEBRATE YOUR WEDDING, LIKE YOU CELEBRATE YOUR BIRTHDAY, IF YOU DO NT HAVE A WEDDING CAKE AT YOUR WEDDING IT DO-SENT FEEL LIKE A WEDDING, IS PART OF THE CELEBRATION, I MAKE WEDDING CAKES AND PEOPLE WORRIED SO MUCH ABOUT THEIR WEDDING CAKE LIKE THEY WORRIED ABOUT THE DRESS, SO NEXT TIME YOU HAVE A WEDDING YOU NEED A CAKE, LET ME KNOW.

Try jelly filled donuts, they go over well and if there any left over, people can throw them instead of rice.

to me only tradition.
