I have a SATA hard drive, but the computer blue screens ..?

... when I try to install Windows. Feels like a driver problem, but where do I go from here? Mother board is FOXCONN, works fine with an IDE drive, and yes I have the disk with the SATA drivers on it. Trying to install Win XP. I'm getting desperate as 40GB hard drive is full. HAve already tried unplugging all USB and spare devices inc old IDE drive. MB manual is useless.

well, first of all you have to say at what point your pc "bluescreens".

does it load windows setup at all?

if it does load windows setup,at which part does it bluescreen?

are you installing windows on the SATA drive?

you said your 40gb drive is full,is that where you're installing windows?is still there enough space?other than the space required for the installation, windows need some free space to store temporary files during installation.

i know i've asked more questions than answered yours, but more details is needed to correctly troubleshoot the problem.jumping into incorrect conclusions usually end up with more problems.

if only you could supply more details.

    i know i didn't help,but anyway...cheers.

I had this exact difficulty with a WD no longer undemanding force, it grow to be an argument with the sata cable, for some reason they're quite tempremental as to the kind of sata cable it may use. This sounds weird and wonderful i comprehend as though a cable works it extremely works. yet i attempted 2 much less costly cables on mine and have been given BSOD, then i spent some quid greater desirable and offered a moulded branded one and it extremely works effective. i thinks (and this may well be a wager) that this manner of WD ought to have a suited connection or it blunders.

Have you gone through the bios screen to familiarize yourself with the settings and make sure everything is cool there? I once built a PC and had bad ramm that caused the Operating system to load totally corrupted. Ran a microsoft memory check that you download and boot off a floppy to check the memory and sure enough bad ramm. Another PC I built had sata ports on the mobo for regular basic sata connection and a set for raid only. Might try another sata port too.

You may have pointed to the problem when you said the hard drive was full. If it is, there is no room for the operating system. Otherwise try this:

Restart that computer and enter the setup.

Turn on the caps lock, num lock and scroll lock keys.

Press the alt and E keys together.

Press the alt and F keys together.

Press alt + B keys together.

    The computer will restart.

Check if the hard drive gets detected.
