When is enough, ENOUGH? In light of the recent tragedy at VA Tech...?

...when are we going to take responsibilty for our children & loved ones? As in past school killings there were plenty of warning signs. When will we learn? This is not only the school administrations problem, but it is everyones. We have got to let the teachers do their jobs & not protect the ones that are "off". Sure they need help, but ignoring the fact that they have issues is not a solution. We need to stop coddling these "creative writers" and free thinkers. When people are writing, drawing or acting out these scenes they need to be looked at. "Normal" people do not think about these things! We have to stop worrying about hurting their feelings or feeling stupid. These people need to be examined with a magnifying glass. We have got to protect the innocent victims from these pyschopaths! This is such a painful, but preventable event for our nation. My prayers go out to all those who have lost someone or were hurt by this tragedy. May the Lord give them strength to cope.

Update:

If I offended anyone, I don't care. This latest massacre has made me sick.

Update 2:

another thing, in regards to the school not being shut down after the "domestic dispute"... I understand why the authorities did that. They believed it was an isolated incident. It would be like shutting down a small town for a domestic disturbance at one house.

Update 3:

To St L. (your name says enough about you)...my whole point is that we have seen this all before in just about every other school shooting...so yea...HIND sight is 20-20, but we obviously need new glasses!

Update 4:

warples...i agree with you about reaching out. these past 2 days i have heard on the news about both teachers & students knowing that something was wrong with this kid, but chose to ignore it. plenty of warning signs there & no one acted on it.

Update 5:

I refer to his "artistic" behavior as creative writing/thinking because that is the EXCUSE people use for not checking into his mental & emotional status. They didn't want to hurt anyones feelings. WHATEVER! How do you think they feel now?? He should have been checked out. As should anyone who is writing, acting out or drawing about murder, torture, rape, abuse, etc...I dont give a crap about hurting someones feelings or image! This should have been a lesson learned from previous events.

Update 6:

TJ...so what, he wrote a suicide note explaining why he was crazy. In it he wrote he hated females too. That note was his way of justifying what he did in his own mind. It doesn't make it right. And it doesn't mean he should be free to kill others for whatever reason. He needed help & was ignored, plain & simple.

Update 7:

one more thing TJ...the other killers you mentioned DID in fact, act it out in one way or another.

I just want to thank you for using Answers to ask a question that finally got some REAL discussions going. American Idol what? I'm sick of that!

From all that I have read here, asker and answerers, you all have valid points in some regard. Some of you also showed your disagreement with one another. This is good... it is discussion, This is the start of changes, which is what I think this asker has done, intentionally or not.

As I said, I agree with many things that were said but I feel a few of you should stop and think about this now. Perhaps some of what was written by yourselves was a bit personal. I, personally, see this as a world matter.

    Well said by most. Thanks.

I think that it is not the job of the school system to raise children. I believe that if a student under the age of 18 shows signs of distress or personality disorder (creative writing and "free thinking" are not personality disorders) then it is the job of the school to alert the parents/ guardians that there is a potential problem. If the school suspects abuse, then they should alert the proper authorities. It's kind of a catch 22 though, because i would guess that if the parents were really "involved" then they would probably already know about the problem. I think that the guy in VT was a victim of sexual abuse, probably by a family member or authority figure. (I'm speculating).

I think that we all need to reach out to people who may have problems, or seem lonely. If we are all connected to one another on an emotional level, then things like this would probably happen a lot less often.

It is a good idea, but how do you go about this without infringing on people's right to be as dark and dismal as they want? We cannot start taking away rights out of fear and the need for protection. If we took that route you would have hardly any freedoms after 9/11. What we have to do is try and find a happy medium and we are just going to have to accept that things like this are going to happen if we live in a free society. Straying to far to the right or left is a very dangerous path to tread. What it all comes down to, is that people need to be more attentive to the situations and people that they find themselves around and remove yourself from that situation if you feel that you are endangered in any way. I am by no means insinuating that the people that were murdered were at fault. Also I am not offended by your comment and I am not trying to be argumentative. I am just stating my opinion as I see it. Good day!

P.S. He was required to seek cousling, by the teachers that read his writings from what I understand. This was the impression that I got from the radio station I had been listening to. So there were some steps taken to nip this in the bud, but sadly it wasn't enough.

God is still in Control and he Still shows Mercy and Grace. God DID NOT kill those people, an IDIOT DID. Anyone who knows the Love and Tenderness of God knows that. I will say something that will not help you, BUT it could have been MORE than what was killed. It IS a tragedy that it happened I agree, and my heart goes out to all concerned, however we must take responsibility for our own actions to a certain extent. People blaming God for this is not going to bring them back. This is just what the ones want that puts God down and says that he is not real. They are doing nothing but heaping coals on their own head by doing so.

Wait so your saying creative people (drawing, or writing) violent scenes and what not should be examined?! Writing and drawing these scenes help them to deal with what they are going through... IT DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE KILLERS.... or that they would actually kill. I myself am a quit creative person.. and sometimes when I write, draw, or do whatever it's violent but I will never kill anyone (unless self-defense or protecting family/friends) That does not mean I need to be "examined by a magnifying glass. It's just a way to let off steam. There is no such thing as a normal person... I'm sure you yourself think about beating someone for hurting you and yours..... lol So you saying that everyone needs to be examined? I mean my own grandma occasionally says "violent things" but she won't do them.

    What a crock!!!

Creative thinkers is not the problem.. easy access to weapons is more likely to be the problem here.. society injustices perpetrated by the ultra wealthy is another major catalyst and problem..

Creative thinkers have given the world most of the things including space travel.. without "thinkers" society falls over and becomes stale..

Stop ignoring the facts.. and i cant even believe you are a top contributor to ask such a propaganda laden ridiculous and opportunistic question.. this all but proves they hand out top contributor tags here to those who follow suit.. coz this question is a joke!!

    YOU are a joke!!

The killer in this case left a suicide note where he states his hatred for the rich kids and for debauchery... he even said it!

His writing was a mirror for his thoughts.. but not the cause of his actions.. not the trigger..

You are the type to encourage further gun adoption as a means of fixing the problem.. but in doing so you are making the problem worse..

Oh.. and the kids who did Columbine.. were not creative writers.. nor was Timmy McVeigh who blew up the Oklahoma building.. BUT they all had one thing in common.. a beef against injustices!! a beef against the rich.. and Timmy McVeigh was targetting a police headquarter to fight against a prison sentence dished out to his mate.. creative thinking had nothing to do with it.

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!!

If there was a way to detect this trouble it would have been done. hind-sight is 20-20. Your message seems off the deep end to me so maybe you should be put in prison because you seem unstable

You are a true bone-head to try to think up a scape goat such as a name to defend an argument. It is not a name that defines us, it is what is said or done. When you grow up, ask a question and let it stand and don't be childish adding on to it to get the last word

  • 1 decade ago

Yea, and this is why a 6 year old was taken to the office because they colored his family picture with red. (because they were sunburned) Creative writing is just a part of our culture, but I do agree he should have been evaluated by a counselor. We don't need to be fascist here.

  • they said the leader of the tech knew that soemoen had a gun when they heard the first shot! they didn't warn anyone! that is outragous! this could have totally have been prevented!

You are absolutely right, but I don't think it will ever happen.

People complain too much about their "rights", and we have stupid laws to protect them. Therefore, innocent people get hurt and killed.

They just keep taking away OUR rights.
