Kitchen life?

I love cooking, I study every night even when I don't have a reason to. I've worked my way from a pizza place to a prep/line cook in a super gourmet restaurant. I just noticed that the pay really doesn't change at all. Although I love my job and wouldn't care if all it paid was minimum wage, I'm just wondering how does a person make more money in a kitchen? Is it worth going to school or should I try to find a ACF apprenticeship and take management courses on top of that?

Yes I end up make decent money when I work 60-70 hours a week but I think this might be my career. Also what do chefs do when they are too old to keep up in a kitchen and can't retire Is there an old chef graveyard somewhere?

Update:

also I have about 5 years total experience, first few were in sandwich and pizza shops, then worked ina bakery for about 2 years, now have about 3 years of fine dining gourmet.

I want to move to chicago in a few months, but what amount of money am I worth per hour right now.

I would love to take your place right now...In a few years you will be raking in the big bucks...somebodys bound to move on or retire and they will look for someone with experience to step up and take the reins....Just hang in there...I know its like you ain't getting rich right now but you just wait...either management will bump you up to a fat paycheck or someone will come by and snatch you up and pay big bucks...hang in there kiddo ..good thangs is gonna happen!..and just think...you love this job right? ..how lucky can you be!

I went to Culinary school as well. The problem with being a chef is you work when everyone else wants to eat. Also it takes a long time to work your way up the chain. Once you graduate you should be able to get a little bit of a pay increase but you will still be putting in alot of hours. Bottom line Chefs put in alot of hours which is why i decided not to become a chef. Once you become a head chef is when you start to make more money but that can take very different ranges of time to get to that point and once you are there you have to decide what restaurants want you and which ones pay well. But if you cant handle working alot of hours especially at night i would reccomend looking around for a different profession.

many chefs such as the executive and sous chefs make alot of money some 100 thousands dollars give or take. how much you will get paid depends on the location in which you live where you'll be working and the experience and education you have in this profession. cant really give an approximate of how much someone will pay you because of this. you could go to a culinary school if you wish, it cant hurt, and when you get older if you decide to go to school for this you could become a teacher at a culinary school. good luck.
