Determine the empirical formula for a compound that is 36.86% N and 63.14% O by mass.

    N2O3

    since they only give you the percent assume there is 100g of the substance and that makes the percents the number of grams of each substane. Then find the moles of each substance.

    36.86gN/14.01gN = 2.6 moles N

    63.14gO/16.00gO = 4 moles O

    then you divide each moles by the smallest one

    2.6/2.6 = 1mole N

    4/2.6 = 1.5 mole O

    since 1.5 isnt extremely close to the next whole number you multiply both by 2 and get

    1 x 2 = 2 moles N

    1.5 x 2 = 3 moles O

    hence N2O3
