Light rail?

With gas prices so high, do you think people will heavily use the light rail system? Will it help further development (restaurants, condo, parks, residents, things to do, etc.) in the "Copper Square" and downtown area?

Personally I think no one will use it and it's a HUGE waste of money. On top of what Steven mentioned about it "killing" downtown (and a bunch of businesses down Central Ave), it is not convinent. It's nice if you live along its route and work along that same route. But 99% of this valley DOES NOT!!! What about everyone in Scottsdale? Or out in the West Valley? Or up north of Metro Center. Yeah, city limits go up at least another 10+ miles past Metro and that doesn't include Anthem!!! I can't even speak for the East Valley, who doesn't get their section for several more years.

So no, I think it is a huge waste and will not help the "Copper Square" or any of the other businesses around downtown.

I think people will use it, once it is up and running. A lot of people in Phoenix are too snobby for public transpot, but we have a lot of people moving here from places where public transport is the norm. I know I would use it to get in and out of downtown for games and stuff. I hate driving out of there after a game, the traffic is crazy and at least 60% of the drivers are drunk.

I think it is just one of those things where everyone says they won't use it, but it will get used none the less once it is up and running.

Imagine you live in Tempe, but work in Phoenix. Are you really telling me that you would rather spend an hour in rush hour traffic and waste roughly a quarter of a tank of gas a day when you could zip home in 20 minutes while reading a book for about a buck a trip? Please only morons would continue to insist on driving in that scenario.

The point is, for some people it will be so convenient and cheap in comparison they will have to use it, because it makes too much sense not to. Some people will use it because they already rely solely on public transpo and this is a vast improvement to what is currently available. Either way, the train will fill up.

The polls out here say that 85% of people will not use it. During the construction a lot of places have closed down and or moved away from the rail.

Public transportation has never really worked in any major city west of the Mississippi River.
