Vacuuming Grey Stuff out of my carpet?

I moved into my apartment in December, and have 5.5 months left. Every time I vacuum my carpet, I get a white/grey matter that cakes to my vacuum filter and I have to scrub to get it off. Looking at the carpet, it doesn't look like anything is wrong. What could this possibly be? I've tried looking online for answers, but have found nothing. Also, since I've moved in, my asthma seems to have gotten worse and I've been getting migraines multiple times a week. I've never thought that they could be related, but was talking to someone and got to thinking. Any idea's? Also any idea's on what to do about it? Should I take a sample into the health department?

I seriously doubt that your health department is going to be interested in your problem. The grey stuff is normal household dirt and the best thing to do is to get the carpets replaced. If the management balks at replacing the carpet see if they will spring for a steam cleaning. Steam cleaning won't be as good as new carpets but it will get a lot more of the gunk out of your carpets than vacuuming.
