What would happen with a (US federal) system of completely voluntary taxation?

this is a serious question! It would put the people back in control of their lives, but how well would it work?

Update:

Avatar, roads could be private, or otherwise should be paid for with gas taxes.

Paul, classes are a figment of socialist imagination. Who are you to decide what is fair for others?

Guy, get a grip, the Q was about involuntary taxation. Force of one man against another is criminal.

We would have no roads, probably. And no utilities. And probably no government.

    Sounds like a plan.

I think there would be upper middle class and higher class people paying because they feel guilty about the benefits with no costs.... the lower to lower middle class would not pay into it because they think the government owes them something (disability, social security, unemployement..)..... i dont think it would change anything that wasnt alreally currently happening....

kinda sounds more socialist... except in a socialist society people pay and make thier FAIR share.

It would be like making all laws voluntary. Imagine just telling a judge that you choose not to obey red lights, to drive 120 mph because, after all, your car was designed to go that fast.

Taxes are the money we choose to charge ourselves to run the government. How could the government exist at all if you couldn't force people to pay them?
