They mention him because he was a great President (he was elected at 70 just to let all you people who use mccains age as an excuse)
They use him to set goals for the future...
much different than "dwelling"

As we all get older we are taught in school and experience knowledge that if you know the past you can then move forward.
I miss 2000 McCain.
