My Grandad got c-diff.?

He has been in and out of hospital for the past 5 months last time he was in he contracted c-diff. He then got home but was vomiting blood due to some sort of veins in his chest. Last night when i was visiting he was shouting for his mother who has been dead for over 30 years. Today we were told to prepare for the worst and have been told his bloods are bad and his kidneys have shut down. Is this anything to do with c-diff? thanks.

    C. Diff is a bacterium which produces two types of toxin A and B, can present as mild diarrhoea through to severe and life threatening illness. I'm so sorry to hear your granddad contracted this illness. Unfortunately, there are many predisposing factors to developing C. diff and your granddad falls into many of those categories - He's elderly; been in and out of hospital; possibly been on different antibiotic treatments recently; other medical conditions which may make him more vulnerable to contracting C. diff i.e. "blood due to some sort of veins on his chest" is not characteristic of C. diff, but the fact that his medical condition is deteriorating puts him in a higher risk cetegory. Your parents should speak to your granddad's consultant. Thinking about you.

Clostridium Difficile is a toxin in the intestinal tract that may be contracted via other patients, the environment or because of extensive antibiotic use. C Diff's complications include dehydration, kidney failure, diarrhea, and possibly the leaking of bacteria into the bloodstream (sepsis). The cause of your grandfather's kidney failure and bacteria in his blood is because of this. His hallucinations may be because of severe dehydration due to the C. Diff. The most common treatment for C.Diff is a regimen of Metronidazole (Flagyl). I hope this helps and I wish you the best.
