When their drinking interferes with their life. Oddly enough, alcoholics don't realize this is happening most of the time. They are very good at justifying what they do. That's called d.e.n.i.a.l. (don't even know I am lying). Like "I can stop anytime I want to", or calling off work or school because of hangover, drinking instead of studying, repeating themselves incessantly, drinking until they puke instead of just having a couple to take the edge off, spending money they planned to do something else with, and hurting their friends and family.

When they can't have just one. And when they are the only person drunk in a group.
I don't think it's alcoholic to drink before noon or alone.

When they keep drinking long after they are totally drunk and it happens alot. When they have to drink to avoid getting the shakes. Blackouts are a big sign.
