What CPU architecture for Linux do I need to install for my processor?

I am running an AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core Processor 6000+ and I want to install Fedora. I cannot figure out if I need i686 or i386 or x86_64. Which ones can I run or Should I run?

Thank You!

Most people will recommend x86_64 because your processor is a 64 bit processor. This, however, will cause problems if you want to use 32 bit applications which have not been ported to 64 bit yet. Sure, there is 32 bit emulation in almost all 64 bit linuxes, but it's far from fool proof, and i can tell you right now that zsnes does not work correctly.

I recommend i686 for 64 bit architectures if you're going to use it for your personal desktop.

x86_64 if you don't mind being frustrated.

[edit] Fedora is sluggish (although rather nice) I recommend ubuntu.

The preferred order would be x86_64 or, if need be, i686. The x86_64 will be the best choice since it can use > 4GB of ram. Some software/drivers may not be compatible with a 64-bit OS so if you find that to be the case then drop down to i686.
