I heard that the Taj Mahal was originally a Hindu monument. Is that true?
This sounds pretty controversial but I watched a documentary that claimed that there are many 'secret' chambers in the Taj Mahal that aren't accessible to the public. Apparently, there are Hindu sculptures in there and attempts have been made to eclipse this discovery with the story of the Muslim ruler building a tomb for his late wife. Can anyone please shed some light on this? Is this a fact or a myth?

This balloon has been floating around for a long time. But it has no scientific (in this case, archeological) basis. Look at the Taj's structure, it is distinctly Islamic in style. Compare it with similar sturctures in Turkey and Iran, and we know instantly where the external facade has been copied from. As for secret chambers, well who is stopping investigations? Surely when NDA was in power they could have investigated this rumour and put it to rest one way or another. I want to see one established archeologist say this before I can believe it. Please do not go by what some one without proper knowledge says. Also, let us not give currency to baseless claims.

It's definitely a myth. The building plans are still extant. The Taj Mahal was designed and built by (Muslim) Persian architects specifically imported for the purpose.

It is a fact that the Taj Mahal was a tomb for the rajah's wife when she died and now it is a national shrine

No this is a theory from a guy called Purushottam Nagesh Oak, he also says that the tombs of Humayun, Akbar and Itmiad-u-Dallah — as well as "all historic buildings" in India — and also the Vatican in Rome and Stonehenge — were also Hindu temples or palaces.

I heard that Mr. so and so was a mad man, is it true ? You heard it, not red it in any history book, that means you heard a rumour isn't it ? Can a rumour be true ? Better to identify the vested interest behind spreading such rumour, which you heard.
