How do you write a letter of query for Grad school?

I am looking to go to grad school and I was told that a letter of query is a good idea. I was wondering how to write one of these letters?

Are there any examples online somewhere?

A letter of query is usually what is submitted to university press prior to your dissertation. What you want to write is a personal statement.
