My cockatiel hates me after having his wing clipped?

Hello,

A few days ago I wrote and asked about my cockatiel who I found some dried blood on the side of one of his wings after wings clipping by the vet. He's alright now and he's very healthy. But I realised one more thing happened is that he wouldnt want to step up on me anymore after clipping wings where he always sit on me before the whole wings clipping thing. Now he comes to me occasionally but most of the time if I tried to pick him up from his cage he would run away and go somewhere else. Having said this, he still giving me kisses and following me around (in his cage) but just didnt want to come sit on/with me. I think he's really pissed off with me and I dont know what I should do to get him come out with me again.

Your advice and experience will be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

My bird has done this many times...

He's just upset with you for now, due to the fact that he probably blames you for the trip to the vet. He will get over it in time, just keep persisting with him and maybe give him some treats.

    =) xx

He is just upset. He will get over it in a few days.

The disturbing aspect is that the Vet seems to have injured him during the clip. This is unforgivable for a Vet!

You might consider clipping his wings yourself. It is very easy. You will need another person to hold him for you. Just towel him ( Cover with a thick fluffy towel) and grab the bird. Have the friend hold him while you find his wing and pull it outside the towel. Extend the wing out to full extension so that all the feathers are exposed. Then use ordinary sharp scissors to cut off the tips of several or the primary flight feathers. You can find more detailed instructions on the web complete with pics or diagrams. You first attempt may result in some ragged looking feathers, but that will not hurt your bird. Your cockateil will not like it, but he will forgive you after he makes you suffer for a few days and "Gives you the tail."

Linda and John are correct. While it is possible that a blood feather was clipped, a veterinarian of all people should be more careful than that, and the behavior is definitely not normal. I clipped my own bird's wings consistently (with someone to help me, it's much easier that way) for the nine years I owned them, virtually never clipped a blood feather (because the difference between blood feathers and mature feathers is visible, you can see the difference), and they never acted aloof afterward. I suspect whatever happened was traumatic for your bird and shook his trust in humans. Cockatiels aren't the sort of bird to hold a grudge, and it's far more likely that he's become afraid/hand-shy and is uncomfortable, not that he's angry or punishing you. They really don't have that sort of temperament.

No respectable bird groomer would injure a bird while clipping it, much less an actual veterinarian. Personally I would not take him to get clipped by that vet again--small animal vets are not guaranteed to know what they're doing when it comes to birds. You might want to learn to do it yourself. As long as you have a partner working with you (one person to hold the bird while the other trims the feathers) it's not difficult, your bird won't hold a grudge or be afraid of you if you do it properly and consistently, and you won't be paying out your nose to someone who might be hurting your bird.

I agree with Gwen, Linda, and John.

Personally; I would never even have gotten a cockatiels wings clipped. Unless it was a danger to the bird to not have it done.

Cockatiels are GREAT fliers..Not so good at climbing, which is what they have to do when their wings are clipped. They have really big bulky feet compared to other birds, which really get in their way.

Don't worry about it, though. He will get over it, I'm sure. Just don't ever take him to that vet again.

I can't believe he clipped a blood feather! That must have hurt so much =/

It's not your fault, though. It's the vets fault. If he didn't clip that blood feather, your bird wouldn't be this upset. Just leave his cage door open and lay on your bed and read a book or something. Eventually he'll miss being there with you and come cuddle with you :)

My tiel got pretty pissed at me when my brother let her out and she flew up really high onto out chandelier and he used a fishing net to get her down..Oh it was a mess..Her wings and legs got caught in it..But, she got over it. Just don't stop letting him out of his cage!

Sounds like the vet gave him a bad clip. I would have clipped only the first 3 or 4 primary feathers on each wing . Just enough that the blunt ends don't show out from under the wing.Actually I usually start out just doing 2 on each wing and see how much the bird can fly and then do another if necessary.I like for my birds to be able to fly short distances, if it's a medium size bird. He's unsure of himself, like if we could walk one day and then couldn't.It's a big adjustment. When they grow back, don't get him such a radical clip. My sun conure had a bad clip one time and he would fall so much it broke all his tail feathers and when they would try to come back in, he would break the blood feathers to where I had to keep pulling them out . It was a mess until his flight feathers grew back.

hi :) i've got had a entire of 8 parakeets in my existence. that's accepted, your poultry is particularly traumatic, it hasn't adapted to the cage or enviorement yet What you need to do? place your birds cage the place your loved ones interacts, yet do no longer provide it any interest, after it appears like the poultry has come out of the corner get a chair and take a seat a million meter removed from the cage :) and whistle, sing, communicate on the telephone, in basic terms so as that it may get use to you. think of you became placed in a house finished of human beings and that they have been all pointing, respiration and starting to be loud noise at you :) comparable with birds it they sense nervous. After a pair of days, you may then initiate in basic terms putting out the cage alowing it to step out, leap on your finger and so on, :) and make valuable once you do it, you hide its eyes with a towel because of the fact then it may provide up shifting suitable of success !

my tiel got depressed for a few days after his feathers were clipped, but he got more dependent on me to pick him up and move him to where he wanted to go. he was giving me trouble about getting in his cage so that's why i had it done. that was over a year ago and he learned to go in his cage when i told him to get in. he will be mad for awhile, but he will come around, he doesn't know why you did this, just give him time and he will be ok you will see
