The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time (called "Summer Time" in many places in the world) is to make better use of daylight.

In Pepsi Light, where'd you think they got that "light"?

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Truth be known, nothing's changed with the light. The Sun still rises and sets on the same regular cycle no matter if we, the people, are clocking it with standard time or daylight savings time. So there is no left over light no matter what time we assign to the Sun rising and setting.

But, this is important, we set our clocks so the Sun's rising happens an hour later in DST than in standard time. So even though the Sun is on the same cycle and the amount of light we get each day from it remains unchanged by the time we set, we mark the Sun coming up at, say, 7 AM on DST instead of 6 AM on standard time.

During WWII, somebody decided the Allies could save energy by moving the clocks to DST. They needed that extra energy to support the war against the Japanese and Germans. So the Allies went to the first ever DST. Over time, after the war, other nations followed suit. And that's how we ended up with DST throughout the world... almost. There are still a few holdouts that refuse to do DST.

Supposedly energy is saved because, if we assume a 9 to 5 work day, people will be working and going home late afternoon in daylight when on DST. So they will not need artificial lights and that will save the energy. If we failed to switch to DST, some late workers would need to switch on their lights at work as it gets dark earlier according to the clock. And they would also turn on their lights at home. That would be energy wasteful when DST would give us sunlight at a later hour and there would be no need for the artificial lights.

It saves you having to stay in bed during the spring/summer, but you can lie in when winter comes around :) when you get the hour back, shame there is no Interest, like with money :(
