It's called a vowel reduction - it's typical for many vowels in Russian. The unstressed "e" can sound like "и", "ы", the point is - it becomes unclear, reduced. Feel free to say "жынá" (ЖЕНА - wife), "цынá" (ЦЕНА - price), "дирéвня" (ДЕРЕВНЯ - village), "мишóк" (МЕШОК - sack), "дéрива" (ДЕРЕВО - tree). When it's stressed, it should sound like [э] with the palatalized ("soft") consonant in front of it:

бéрег = [б'эр'ик] (coast), in this word both consonants [б'] and [р'] are "soft".

There was a question on related subject , about the vowels o and a. If you are interested in my explanation, it's here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=201002...

Source(s): it can be interesting (and it's correct if you doubt Wikipedia): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_phonology#Vow...

I know because I need to know, and thats all you need to know.

Never question yourself chum, especially on your own language, only leads to a downhill road with no brakes.
