Yes, by buying magazines and watching tv, we are shamed in a sense because they know we will compare our lives to the "perfect" celebrity lives they present. We want quick fixes to what we feel is wrong in our lives and so we buy these things to find out how to buy ourselves into being more beautiful and more ego-satisfied like celebrities. It drives the fashion and diet economies.

Shame is not necessarily a bad thing though. If you are fat and don't take care of yourself, a little shame that motivates you to get to the gym will a) help you be fit and healthier and cost society less in taxes to provide healthcare for you b) help you attract a mate c) hlep you increase endorphins and feel better about yourself. Cultures that are less accepting of fatness, like the French, have healthier lifestyles, even though they eat richly and drink.

People say that magazines put to much pressure on women to be thin, but the fact is, Americans are too fat. There should be more shame put on fat people, because being fat costs people who take care of themselves money for fat people's health care. Obesity and heart disease are huge epidemics in the US. I say bring on the shame!
