Can my cockatiel recognise me?

Hi,

I have a male cockatiel for 1.5 years and I brought him home since he's 3-month old. He's very tamed and friendly (although he bit me some time when he's not in the mood) where I also spent time with him every day and evening. However, I will have to go overseas for my research for around 2 months and since I have no one who wants to look after my bird during my absence so I decided to send him to a particular bird shop (they look after birds very well and all boarding birds are stay in the individual cages - in fact I got my bird from there). I am just wondering when I come back to pick him up after 2 months, 1) Can he recognise me after 2 months? and 2) Will he be untamed when I bring him home after 2 months?

Thank you in advance

Birds have very good memories... I know someone who has to frequently leave his bird due to work, sometimes for months and it always remembers him when he comes back. I also know someone who unfortunately had to give her birds away and she visited them a year later and they recognised her. I have quite a few more examples of this from people I personally know. Like today a coworker came to visit the store after leaving a few months ago and the resident macaw immediately flew over to her and clearly showed he recognised her.

So I think your bird will recognise you. As to how it will react, this can differ from bird to bird. Some are over-the-moon to see you again, some may hold a grudge but warm up to you again and things will be back to normal.

As to whether he will become unsocialised during those 2 months, that depends on whether the bird shop plays with him and takes him out regularly. Make sure they do otherwise he could really suffer being left in his cage all the time for 2 months (this exact thing happened to a friend of mine and her lorikeet still plucks itself bald a year later). If they aren't going to handle him daily, find another proffesional pet sitter or a vet, etc to look after him for you.

    Hope that helps. :)

Parrots are exteremely smart, and I highly doubt that your cockatiel would be untamed after you come back. A few species such as IR parakeets will lose their tameness after not being handled regularly but cockatiels are known for their sweet and loyal nature. I'm sure he will recognize you- after all after 1.5 years, 2 months isn't going to make him forget you. I would, though request that the employees take him out to prevent depression on his end. Cockatiels do best when they are regularly handled, and if emotionally neglected and bored for 2mo. , then behavioral problems could appear. Although I think it would be a safe assumption to say that he will be very happy after you return!

Remember, Parrots are very smart. And yes they can recognize you. My Cockatiel does.

Yes he will recognie you. He might be be a little unhappy that you left him so long, but if that happens it won't last long once you're back.

they remember everything, he will know you, but might be real happy to see you or he might be a little angry.once you are home it might take time to get back in his good graces, i am sure he will miss you and things will get back to normal.
