How smart is your dog?
My dog can't sit, stay, play 'dead' or fetch anything. But I think he's a really smart dog.
I usually jog on Saturday mornings and I'll bring him out for his weekly walks thereafter. And he usually knows it's time for his walks because he recognizes my jogging attire.
There were some days I broke away from routine and jogged on weekdays. My dog's so smart he could recognise it wasn't Saturdays! He gets all edgy and barky only on Saturdays. But when he sees me in my jogging attire on weekdays, he doesn't demand for his weekly walks.

Having four dogs now and having had many dogs, Their learning sit ,roll over and fetch really doesn't matter unless this is what you want them to do. Frankly thats boring. I taught my dog Trouble to catch footballs and frisbee. He could go out for a long pass and run patterns based on the call count at the line of scrimmage. Yea he played wide receiver with all of us. He was better then anyone even Jerry Rice. People were amazed. He caught the ball and just ran to the end zone. Then he dropped it or brought it back after the play. Now that's a dog! He passed on into the big dog heaven in the sky. He was pretty old for Belgian shepherd 12 and had cancer. My Dog Titus a really big Doberman just knows when it is time to go walking. Dogs all have their own tricks and they teach each other good tricks and bad ones. Trouble Taught Lucky my Stabbyhoun to catch frisbee. Lucky would also play defense against Trouble. It was funny to watch because Lucky was unstoppable.

I had a German Shepard when I was a kid that would meet me at school when it let out.He would just sit and wait. Well the dog catcher got him one day, and from then on he would meet me at the first road he would have to cross toward the school. I did not teach him that he figured it out by himself. I was kind of glad because when we would meet he would grab my arm with his teeth and pretty much drag me home. This was only one block compared to the 8 blocks previous to that. It really wasn't even my dog at first. The people that owned him had a 6 foot privacy fence and this dog would climb it and be at my house every morning waiting on me. They installed an electric fence on top of the privacy fence, an he would still be at my house every morning. Finally they said you can just have him. I loved that dog & he loved me too!

Saber..
He can
Sit
Stay
Come
Leave it
Ignore it
Fetch
A lil Frisbee [Not to fond of it though]
Lay down
Stand Up
Give Paw
Go on
Agility Training [Still Not Perfected]
My dog goes with my on long walks but he likes to pull me on my skateboard, if he goes to fast I will command him with "Easy". If dogs bark at him I will tell him to "Ignore it" and he will not even glance, and i made sure to teach him "leave it" cause people leave food and stuff on the ground. If i need to stop Ill say "wait" and when I want to go "go on"....I think Saber is very smart and I am proud to own him.

Smart enough to open the fridge with paws, open my metal pedal bin.
Smart dogs can be just as much work to train, if not more at times, but worth it.

Smart enough to turn lights on, fetch me things by name, and make my bed.
