Optical audio out adapter.?

My new HD TV has and optical audio out but my speakers only use the white and red connections. Is there an adapter I can buy and if so where can I get it. Radio shack was useless and so was wal-mart.

Update:

I need this so I can watch cable programs in surround sound. The Audio In is fine...it's the audio out on the TV that is screwing things up for me.

    STOP.

Ignore the first 2 posters as they are totally wrong.

    (so many things to explain...sigh)

Look - the red/white connectors for speakers are for AMPLIFIED analog signals. To convert from the optical digital signals from your TV requires an AV Receiver.

(What? You think flashes of light can power motors? Thats what speakers are - motors).

    Here is what you do:

    * Hit your local Craigslist in the Electronics area and look for an AV Receiver. It must be a Dolby Digital receiver from a major company like Yamaha, Dennon, Onkyo. You can even take a Sony or Pioneer. They have been making these for 15 years so you can find older but good units for $65-$150.

Connect the optical output from the TV to the DVD input on the receiver (Yes - the DVD input. HDTV's use the same standard). Then hook your speakers up to the speaker outputs of the receiver. The receiver will decode the optical signals, add power and drive the speakers.

    Hope this helps.

The red and white jacks are not and never can be surround sound. They are left and right front and nothing more.

An adapter that converts optical to coaxial would only work if your receiver has an orange jack (same size and shape as the red and white ones). If not, you need a new receiver to get surround sound.
