If they are joint debts, the companies will come after him for the balance. He can talk to the companies and explain what happened. It could possibly work out to where he can pay them off with no balance. It happened to my wife, when we were first married. We talked with the companies and got no interest on the loan amounts (both were joint credit cards). We paid it in full, so as to not have to file ourselves.
