I second the Comodo firewall along with Avast Free.

Avast has a lot of shields including a web shield that blocks you from visiting a website if it has a virus or trojan. But if it does by any chance let something through then Comodo won't let the virus on your system run, but lets it run in a sandbox. Any program that runs in a sandbox won't effect anything else on your computer so it can do no harm.

Comodo firewall runs all programs that aren't known to be safe in a sandbox.

So if you use Avast and Comodo firewall you get two layers of protection. Make sure you only install the firewall though. You shouldn't have two anti viruses running at the same time.

The best anti-virus is Kaspersky or Norton but they are not free. Kaspersky does offer a free online scan but it doesn't remove what it finds. Second best free are Avast and AVG and others. The Microsoft firewall that comes free with XP and Vista is quite good but unfortunately provides no visibility. If you need visibility, try the free Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is very good but it is difficult for me to say it is the best. The best firewalls are not free. You have phishing filters in Firefox 3 and IE 7 and IE 8 (Smart Screen Filter) and AVG. It's strictly a question of how often the phishing filter database gets updated with accurate information. It's tough to say which is best.

i used to use AVG, but it doesnt get along well with win7. currently i run AVAST and have been very happy with it. I wouldnt worry about the firewall if you have vista or 7 cause both have a decent native firewall(windows defender). if xp, i would install Zone Alarm.

You can download any/all of the above free from cnet at www.download.com

For XP (SP2 or higher) try Microsoft Security Essentials. It’s a free download that is supposed to defend your computer against viruses, worms, Trojans, and other malicious software.
