To factorise x^2 + y^2 + 2y -1?

Please help to factorise x^2 + y^2 + 2y - 1

    You can't, not with rational coefficients anyway. You could complete the square, though. That would be useful in an equation to see what sort of conic section is involved. y² + 2y is the beginning of the expansion of (y + 1)², so

    x² + y² + 2y - 1 = x² + (y + 1)² - 2

    I don't see anything else useful to do with this. Maybe someone else will?
