Whirlpool AC making a humming noise and stopped working?

so ive got this rather large ac unit from whirpool... 3 or more years ago, and up until this afternoon it was functioning perfectly, however at some point when i was out it seems to have stopped working and started making some sort of humming noise (the fan wont turn on now) so im just wondering if this is something i could repair myself, also i noticed that someone took out the filter at some point and got the inside filthy, and well thats all i got... any ideas woukd be nice

dont know much about ac units but i do know this.

make sure the power is OFF if u go poking around.

not only make sure the breaker is off, test the power --at the ac-- with a meter.

that filter being off was a no-no as u know.

it cud b that it got so much dust and stuff inside, that it locked up the motor.

as i said, dont know much about ac's, but u cud try spraying it with wd-40 and c if u can get it to turn by hand. it wud have to get to the point of --complete free turning--, otherwise the friction cud start a fire.

r u cud just take out the motor and replace it.

but take it to the ac place to make sure that is the problem.

& put a filter in there.

You could fix the outdoor (and indoor) unit if you are handy and comfortable working around electricity, which most homeowners aren't, so you'd be better off calling an hvac company.

You will need to have the indoor coils cleaned due to it running without a filter.

The outdoor repair will cost from 100 to 250. The evaporator cleaning will be 125. Diagnostic fee of 85. Plus a trip charge and fuel fee of 95. Total of about 4 to 500 hundred.

Sounds like the Fan Motor burned out on Your AC Unit, & that's NOT something You can Replace or Repair Yourself. :( You're going to have to call in a ( Reputable ) AC Repair Man to fix it for you... Call around in the Morning for Estimates. And DON'T wait. -Cuz the Hotter it Gets, the LONGER You'll HAVE To !! :o
