Graphic Designers- How would you handle this situation?

I sell wedding invitations that I designed on Zazzle, which I personalize with the couple's names, date, and colors for a $30 design fee. If the couple wants the same art placed on other items on Zazzle (like matching RSVPs, labels, magnets, etc), I'll set those up for no additional charge since I'm going to make my real money when they order the printing. This process has worked great for about 3 years now.

I have had several times where the couple requested the artwork for things like their website, custom glassware, even cakes, and I have either charged reasonably for the art or just provided it directly to the vendor. However, I now have a couple that wants to give my artwork to another designer to design and print their invitation! I'm a little upset since they already purchased Save the Dates from me, and they know that I design invitations as part of my living. They have given my contact info directly to the other designer, who is now directly asking me for art. I've never been in this situation before .

What would you guys do? Flat out tell them "No", or release the artwork but charge a fee? If you think I should charge a fee, how much do you think is appropriate?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

How do you feel about releasing the artwork? If you are uneasy about it or don't want to, then don't.

You own the copyright and don't have to give anything to the other designer. It was rude of the couple to assume that your would just give your artwork to someone else, but many people don't realize how much time and energy goes into creating something.

I personally would consider releasing the artwork, but I would write up a contract for the couple and the designer to sign before handing anything over. Basically, I would state in the contract that the artwork is only for the use of their wedding invitation and no other pieces. If they want to use the artwork for any additional pieces they will be charged accordingly. I would also state that they can't resell or redistribute the art and you may want to say that the other designer can not include the artwork as part of their portfolio or claim the artwork as their own.

As far as a fee for releasing the artwork, I think it should be based on how much time you put into the design or how complicated the design is. I would charge at least $150 for the artwork. This may be too much money for them and they may realize that it's cheaper for you to design it then to go through someone else.

If you end up saying no, just write them a professional and courteous email stating that you don't sell your artwork as stand alone pieces, but as an exclusive line to Zazzle and you want to honor that partnership.

    Good luck!

Tell them no. You own all the copyrights of the art, any other print company not affiliated with you and not paying you is a breach of your rights. Others are not allowed to reproduce, replicate, or otherwise distribute your art without your written consent.
