What is a good pet for kids?
2 boys, ages 9 and 6. We already have 3 dogs. So, no cats and no more dogs...sorry. :)
For the people who are saying that I have my hands full enough...let me give you a few more details. I do let the kids walk the dogs, that's part of their chores around the house.
They want to get like fish or mice or something small that they can keep in their room. They have it all figured out and want to use their allowance to purchase and take care of their new pet. I am just trying to get details on what type of small animal or fish would be a good fit for them, so I can guide their purchase.
Thanks to everyone for their answers so far.

How about something which will be educational? A small lizard, frog or an axolotl salamander...these are fairly cheap to keep, and although you can't handle frogs or salamanders they are very cute, and fun to watch in their natural environment. You could teach them about the biological differences of these animals. White's treefrogs, leopard geckos, or again, axolotl are all suggestions I could make. In addition, these animals live very long lifespans so if properly cared for will be around to see your kids grow up. Small, fluffy things tend to have a lifespan of 2-5 years and there is all manner of heartbreak in the kids when these little critters die. If you do want something fluffy, I would suggest a pair of pet fancy rats. They are cuddly, friendly and playful small critters. I would suggest you avoid bunnies, which are more delicate, and hamsters, which are more prone to biting.

Well having three dogs and two children already sounds like hard work for you, so keep it simple. Perhaps some fish which are easy to handle, the easiest, in fact. Then you can keep them in their rooms and you only have to feed them once a day and only have to clean the tank out when it gets dirty (not often). Get goldfish, either two in each bowl or just one in each bowl.

How about a hamster or guinea pig. They are small and easy to take care of, but still have a lot of personality and are fun to watch.

Ha, i'm surprised you even want more pets. I would try either fish or a guinea pig.

they should be happy with the pets they have. Dogs are really time consuming and you should let them walk them and so they can interact with the dogs then they won't need another pet

guinea pigs honestly their so soft and rarely bite! they like being in pairs so you can get one each for your kids :)

You can buy a parrot. After all, with some training, it can perform stunts, and even talk. That should keep your kids occupied!
