A track is supposed to be 400 meters, however, the people that build tracks are know to make mistakes, that is why a track must be measured with a steel tape when a record is set to determine if it is an accurate track.

I have seen tracks that are much shorter than 400 meters at schools used for meets.

Some older tracks were built at 440 yards which is longer than 400 meters, some have been converted and some are still used in yards.
