freezing baby rats alive?

I just got 2 young female rats from a pet store. They were housed with males so I am thinking my rats are pregnant. When I called the pet store today to ask if they were housed with males, I told him that mine appear pregnant. The owner wants me to bring the babies in to him as soon as they are born. I told him he would have to wait until they are weaned and guess what he told me! He said that he only wanted them when they are first-born, not any older. Of course I wondered why and when I asked him, he told me he freezes them ALIVE! And I suggested he separate the females from the males because they are so young and shouldnt get pregnant. He said that he wants them to get pregnant as often as possible so he can freeze the babies. Im so upset. Shouldnt that be animal abuse? I mean, that is so cruel. That is so traumatizing for the mother and the babies. And to freeze to death, thats a horrible death. Im so upset. It makes me want to go and rescue all the rats there at that store, but that will only encourage his behavior. He said that if he doesnt have alot of rats, then he would go out of business. Now, I know what they do with them, and that appalls me too. Rats are so sweet and so angelic when they look at you. They are treated horrible. Is there anything that can be done about this? Im horrified. I cant stand the thought of not going and rescuing at least some of them from such a horrible man. What would you do? This question is for all the rat-lovers out there. I dont want to hear about feeding snakes, my heart cant take it. :(

Update:

I live in kentucky and I dont know what the laws are. Yes I am an animal lover, I cant stand the thought of this. I am trying to look online for anyone I can contact. If anyone has any contact information, please post it. I just cant stand this. I just cant do nothing and let this continue to happen. The thought of it just kills my soul!

Um ever hear of pinkies? A lot of snake owners rather have dead food as opossed to live food. Would you rather a baby rat be killed by freezing or in a snakes mouth? You can't do anything because its completely normal for people to freeze "snake food"

Well, if he uses the frozen baby rats as food for reptiles, such as snakes, then I don't think that is against the law. Ethical? No. However, if he does use them as feeders then I doubt that what he is doing is illegal.

I understand how you feel. The way he is going about freezing them alive is cruel. But if he's using them as feeders then there is nothing you can do about it, because snakes are living, breathing creatures just like rats are and they need to eat too.

I love all animals so I'm not biased here. Snakes can make just as good pets as rats can, it depends on the owner's preferences. Snakes are not vegetarians and so you cannot expect snake owners to feed their snakes carrots and pellets. Snakes eat mice and rats. Accept it. So while rats do make wonderful, rewarding companions, they also make tasty, nutritious meals to snakes.

Never let your love of animals get in the way of nature's natural food chain.

Freezing any animal is a harsh way to euthanize. I am a snake breeder and a rat breeder.

I do not freeze my feeder rodents.

    I euthanize them with CO2.

I have a very elaborate set up but you can do the same thing with baking soda and vinegar or a piece of Dry Ice and some warm water. This is a humane and quick way to put down your feeder rats.

Look up how to euthanize a rat video on You Tube and find the best solution for your budget and reptile feeding needs.

By the way, I used to freeze my rodents until I educated myself about the pain freezing causes an animal.

I am not judging or saying what you do is wrong but being an animal breeder requires personal responsibility if you are going to give us all a good reputation.

As a former mice owner, I personally wouldn't have the heart to bring them in. Don't listen to this man-either find another pet shop that will except the rats (and won't freeze them,) bring them to an animal shelter if you have one, or find responsible family, friends, or peers to adopt one. I really hope you don't give them to this guy, but whatever you do, good luck! :/

Yes you can do something about it. Report him. I don't know what the regulations are around where you live but that is definitely animal cruelty. Let as many people know what you saw, try and get the word out and hopefully he will lose business and have to move on to something more humane than freezing baby rats.

People like that should be locked away.

    EDIT:

Don't get me wrong, I love snakes too, and I am not against feeding frozen pinkies to snakes- they need to eat too. But there are more humane ways to kill baby rats. You don't just shove them into a freezer alive.

Some snakes refuse to eat frozen/thawed so you have to take that into consideration, although you can "train" most of them to do so. I do not feed any of my snakes frozen/thawed prey because I have never had any problems with feeding live prey. It depends on your snake's preference as well as your own. If you do choose to feed live prey, it's better to stun it first so it will not harm your snake. That way it's still alive and wiggling around enough to entice the snake, but it poses no threat.

Sorry to say, But I breed rats as well for feeders. I have 3 snakes and they have to eat too. It's all part of the circle of life. My kids still play with the rats as do I, but they also realize that they are also snake food. My bigger pythons eat LIVE MEDIUM RATS as my baby Brazilian boa eats frozen new born rats that we freeze live.

Report the man and help save those poor rats as soon as possible. The faster you help, the longer those rats will live. If you are animal lover\rat lover, like me, adopt some of them. But plz help them. STAND UP FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY CANT STAND UP FOR THEMSELVES

Call the police - tell them you suspect animal abuse.

Call the local paper with your story - there is such a thing as bad publicity.

Get in touch with your nearest animal right society/charity.

Write to your local representative - senator/councillor.
