Did Muhammad literally fly to heaven on a winged horse? Or was it a visionary experience? Or a lucid dream?

I'm intrigued by this article -- http://heresycorner.blogspot.com/2013/04/dawkins-a... -- and by some of the comments.

As I understand it, according to the Koran and Hadiths, in Muhammad's "Night Journey" he was taken at night to Jerusalem and thence on a tour of the heavens in the company of the Archangel Gabriel. In the course of the journey, the prophet had meetings with Biblical characters including Moses and John the Baptist, and conversed with Allah.

My question is: how do Muslims interpret the Night Journey? Of course, different people might have different interpretations. Please select one of the following options:

A) Muhammad literally flew to heaven on a winged horse. That is, in his physical body, Muhammad rode a physical winged horse, from Mecca to Jerusalem, and thence to heaven, where he met and conversed with physical dead prophets.

B) Muhammad had a visionary experience; i.e., he was vouchsafed a vision of heaven, a vision that was more real than an ordinary dream, in the sense that the vision that came from Allah and may therefore be described as being "real". But he did not literally fly to heaven on a winged horse.

C) Muhammad had a lucid dream, or similar experience in a state midway between sleep and wakefulness, which did not come from Allah.

D) None of the above. (Please elaborate.)

No abusive comments, please.

    Hello Quintic, this is a great question.

    This is a test of our faith to believe in this. The Sahaba (companions of the prophet had no issue with this). In fact, when the Quraysh learned of this, they were so happy, as they felt they had finally got something which they can prove that Islam is wrong.

    The first person they came to was Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (companion of the Prophet). And they asked him (in their sarcastic way), "Do you know what your master is claiming now?" Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, did not know what had happened, it was the first time he had heard. They then related the story....

    How did he respond

    "If he said this, then I have no issue believing it", "in fact, I believe he receives revelation from the heavens"

    The amazing thing is the wisdom, "If he said this" - Firstly he is qualifying whether he got this info, then he affirmed he believed in it. He was named "As-Siddiq" after this, meaning "The truthful".

    I would also like to say that the creature was a "buraaq" not a winged horse.

    I would recommend that you read Muslim sources of this and the lessons learned.

    First .. I am muslim and i am proud .. And reward be to God that i am muslim .. I know that Allah create this distinct univers and prepared it and create me and also you and our first mother and father .. Do you fully grasp that each one this creatures can't be simply created without a god and just via accident ? Ok i will answer your questions .. "2d" .. Handiest Allah is aware of if the heaven and hell are in yet another dimention or no longer . . And Allah who created this mighty univers is able to raise Muhammad and can takes him anyplace .. And also you cannot realise how if allah do not need you to know .. 0.33 .. It is actual (the winged horse) .. I will igve you an instance .. I know why you do not suppose it .. If i will travel in time and inform individuals who lived in an historic time that i can speak with my friend and watch him even if he's away thousand kilometers .. It'll be quite tough to consider it .. But it is actual .. And so they cannot understand how .. Allah who created us is competent to create creatures better than us .. And he's ready to create the winged horse .. However for those who do not think that allah create you .. So who created this world ?? Is it created through hazard ? ! ! ! An illustration .. A quite simple illustration .. A processor .. Can a processor be created via hazard ?? Hhhhhh i know that you is not going to believe me if i say that a auto is created by using danger .. It is crated by using anybody wise .. And a large factory .. .. It seems that you won't feel that a keyboard could also be created by means of danger and determined without anybody created it .. How might you think that every one this creatures and all this univers is created without a creator !! Who is Allah ultimately .. Excuse me if i made some mistakes in orthography seeing that my language is arabic .. And i give you a reward .. I desire you watch that cautiously and have an understanding of it .. Start youtube then write :supply your coronary heart and match all of the things ! Watch the first video .. Just right good fortune ..

    Its funny how Muslims say in the Bible we cant see God, yet conveniantly for Islam, Muhammad can see God in the 7th heaven apparently, AND on a winged horse LOL!! What a religion of "science" ha ha ha.

    Then he [Gabriel] brought the Buraq, handsome-faced and bridled, a tall, white beast, bigger than the donkey but smaller than the mule. He could place his hooves at the farthest boundary of his gaze. He had long ears. Whenever he faced a mountain his hind legs would extend, and whenever he went downhill his front legs would extend. HE HAD TWO WINGS on his thighs which lent strength to his legs.

    He bucked when Muhammad came to mount him. The angel Jibril (Gabriel) put his hand on his mane and said: "Are you not ashamed, O Buraq? By Allah, no-one has ridden you in all creation more dear to Allah than he is." Hearing this he was so ashamed that he sweated until he became soaked, and he stood still so that the Prophet mounted him.[

    Fly To Heaven

    The best understanding of Asra wal Me'raj, nighly journey to heaven, is to take as his personal but truly authentic experience, without debating whether physical or mental experience. It must be believed because he was acclaimed to be truthful and trusworthy even by the disbelievers. In particular, in view of the purpose of his 'journey' being to bring the commandment to pray, Salat, five times daily as the only mechanism to maintain unwavering belief, Iman, in pure monotheism, tawhid. A conscious omission of any of the prescribed prayers is indicative of violation of tawhid, meaning shirk, that is, placing one's will over the Devine will and command. Shirk in any shape or form constitutes unforgivable sin, which can be atoned only by Tawba, that is, through conscious admission of the violation accompanied by remorse and since promise not to commit the sin again.

    The belief in true monotheism, however, has been most satisfactorily substantiated by actual research on consciousness, as constituting highest cognitive achievement as the most reliable immutable frame of reference for doing good and avoiding evil.

    in fact its a lot misconception about mairaj and understanding of islam. first of all Buraq is not a winged horse . its true meaning lies in its name. Buraq is a superlative for Barq which means lightening or light. speed of light is 300000 km per second. so what speed will be when travel is through Buraq. and Buraq is not an animal its mode or mechanism of travelling. see for einstein theory . second masjid aqsa mentioned in quran cant be the mosque in israel as it was not built at that time. Aqsa means in arabic, a far off place . the mosque or place of worship up in heaven where angles worship . rest is mix up.

    No. He'd have to be an actual prophet for that to happen.

    There is nothing extraordinary about Muhammad's Heavenly Journey.

    I do not know the details, but this sort of thing happens all the time.

    A flux of Spiritual Forces transported Muhammad to Heaven,

    which his 6th Human Mind interpreted as a winged horse,

    to automatically preserve his sanity.

    This may be the same sort of experience you call a "Lucid Dream,"

    but that is merely Psychobabble of Wicked Men, pretending that they can

    explain away everything.

    Carlos Castaneda showed that when you do certain exercises in your Lucid Dream,

    your mind grows stronger, until a Line is crossed, and your Dream is no longer imaginary,

    but your Spiritual Body is actually traipsing around in the Real World.

    What is more wonderful is that you don't even stop there, but you can even attain the Power

    to create your own Worlds, and fill them with Living Beings.

    False gods deceive us into thin king that THEY are GIVING us what is OURS' BY BIRTHRIGHT.

    . EXODUS 23:8.

    8. "And thou shalt take no Gift:

    for the gift blindeth the Wise,

    and perverteth the words of the Righteous."

    That we have to do all sorts of weird things in order to get those things- like murder our children and neighbours- which in reality get us deeper and deeper into their control. Where we never even find out that it was THEM who were HOLDING US BACK.

    . JOB 28:28.

    28. "And unto Man He said,

    'Behold, the Fear of The Lord, that is Wisdom;

    and to depart from Evil is Understanding.' "

    . MATTHEW 13:19.

    19. "When any one heareth The Word of The Kingdom,

    and Understandeth it not, then cometh The Wicked One,

    and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart.

    This is he which received seed by the Way Side."

    You are immensely privileged to learn this information from me today:

    . LUKE 10:17-24.

    17. And the seventy returned again with joy, saying,

    "Lord, even the Devils are subject unto us through thy Name."

    18. And he said unto them,

    "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from Heaven.

    19. "Behold, I give unto you Power

    to tread on Serpents and Scorpions,

    and over all the Power of the Enemy:

    and nothing shall by any means hurt you."

    20. "Notwithstanding in this rejoice not,

    that the spirits are subject unto you;

    but rather rejoice, because your Names are written in Heaven."

    21. In that Hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said,

    "I thank thee, O Father, Lord of Heaven and Earth,

    that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent,

    and hast revealed them unto babes:

    even so, Father; for so it seemed good in Thy Sight.

    22. "All things are delivered to me of my Father:

    and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father;

    and Who the Father is, but the Son,

    and he to whom the Son will reveal him."

    23. And he turned him unto his Disciples, and said privately,

    "Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:

    24. "For I tell you,

    'That many Prophets and Kings

    have desired to see those things which ye see,

    and have not seen them;

    and to hear those things which ye hear,

    and have not heard them.' "

    What usually happens is that I never hear anything from you again, because this is not what you wanted to know, and you have no appreciation of the Knowledge at all.

    LUKE 5:36-39.

    36. And he spake also a Parable unto them;

    "No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old;

    if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent,

    and the piece that was taken out of the new

    agreeth not with the old.

    37. "And no man putteth new wine into old bottles;

    else the new wine will burst the bottles,

    and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.

    38. "But new wine must be put into new bottles;

    and both are preserved.

    39. "No man also having drunk old wine

    straightway desireth new:

    for he saith,

    'The old is better.' "
