Do we want our streets to be as unsafe as England?

Since England disarmed their law-abiding citizens, violent crime has risen. Do the anti-gun people think it is preferable when criminals use a machete or meat cleaver to dismember an innocent man rather than a gun? Was it really better to have a man hacked up and stabbed to death rather than allow citizens the means to defend themselves? The governmment sure couldn't protect a man walking a public street in broad daylight, why outlaw the citizens' ability to protect themselves?

By your logic America should be one of the least violent countries in the world.

A comparison of crime stats for the UK and the US shows a mixed bag. The UK has significantly higher assault rates, but much lower homicide rates (and much lower accidental gun related death rates). The influence of widespread gun availability on "safety" is again, a very mixed bag. While there are many cases where having a gun prevents a crime it isn't that simple given the very high rate of gun related death and injury in the US vs most other countries. That said, no-one is talking about disarming US citizens ... at best the efforts are to try to keep guns away from those not mentally suited to have them and to limit the availability of large magazines and automatic weapons not appropriate for civilian (i.e. self protection) use.
