Although Canon has improved with regard to video, I think Sony still does it better. The A77 however has a bizarre LCD hinge that works from a swivel at the bottom and then folds up and out again so that it can be above the camera and facing in any direction. Not such fun with a flash mounted but it does make it useful for video.
Both of them are 'enthusiast stills photographer's cameras' with a top plate info panel, 2 control wheels, and loads of other buttons and dials.
The major difference is that the Sony has a big 2.4mp OLED viewfinder with full live view control. Now this will either wow you because its so big and clear, or worry you if you're a technophobe who feels may prevent you getting decisive moment shots as easily as you can with the optical finder on the Canon. EVFs also eat batteries. The EVF on the Sony means that it has a fixed translucent mirror (no nasty slap!) but that it loses some of the light transmissivity making the Canon rather better in very low light.
If you decide on an A77, put a Sony 18-135 SAM lens on it rather than the 18-55 kit.
Very useful info on Sony/Minolta and third party lenses can be found on the Dyxum site.

If you decide on the Canon, try to budget for their 'L' series lenses. Canon or Nikon remain the 'safe and expected' choice. Sony is more for the individual who appreciates new technology allied to the Minolta heritage which goes back to the 1920's.

Long story short, the Sony A77 is better overall.
Canon had years to deliver a better image sensor, and they failed again. Too many pixels, with AF tech that's great, but still Sony Exmor image sensors are better across the board.
But the Canon will sell more because it says Canon on it.

Here is my break down of the cameras in question.
The Sony a77 uses the legacy Minolta Maxxum "A" lens mount introduced on the Minolta Maxxum AF 7000 in 1985. The Maxxum AF 7000 was the first full-featured auto focus 35mm system camera and literally launched the auto focus revolution. This means that the a77 can use any and all of the currently available previously owned Maxxum AF lenses.
Canon abandoned their legacy "FD" manual focus lens mount when they introduced their EOS Rebel line of auto focus 35mm cameras with the "EF" lens mount in 1988. All those excellent "FD" mount lenses were instantly rendered obsolete since they're useless on an "EF" mount camera body.
Advantage Sony for backwards lens compatibility.
The Sony a77 has Sony's version of Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body so any lens used - even the legendary Maxxum AF 70-210mm f4 zoom known as the "Beercan" will be a stabilized lens. The a77 also has a focusing motor in the camera body which is why those legacy Minolta Maxxum lenses will auto focus on the a77.
Canon has always placed the focusing motor in their lenses. They also have their version of IS in some but not all of their lenses. So with Canon you pay over and over for a focusing motor (which also adds weight to the lens) and you pay again and again for IS in the lenses that have it.
Advantage Sony.
Both Sony and canon offer full-frame DSLR models - Canon the 6D, 5D and 1D, Sony the a99. However, a Canon "EF-S" lens CANNOT be used on any of their full-frame models. Only the Canon "EF" lenses are compatible with their full-frame cameras. Sony also offers lenses designed for their crop-sensor models like the a77 but those lenses CAN be used on the full-frame a99. The a99 body simply crops the sensor to the size of the crop-sensor. Yes, some resolution is lost but at least any Sony lenses you have for the a77 could still be used should you upgrade to an a99.
Advantage Sony for forward lens compatibility.

I would never buy Sony cameras as their repair service serious lacks! Canon has been in business since I started in cameras and that is some odd 60 yrs.
Of course if your are speaking personal taste then I would recommend Pentax K30 DSLR.

Personally, the more important thing is the entire system. Camera bodies come and go. Both the Canon and Nikon systems are great. They have extensive lens, flash, and accessory selections.
However, if all you are doing is basic photo taking and don't plan on needing anything special, the Sony could be fine for you.

They're pretty much the same, but the Sony has the edge in video.
Talk to a dealer and look at ALL the alternatives, though, Nikon and Pentax use Sony sensors, and the acid test of any camera is the way it feels in your hands.

From all sides, the a77 definitely looks better. For pictures, both are good. To shoot video, the a77 is better.
