When I changed banks and direct debits were to be cancelled and re-started with the new bank, I was told it could take 10-14 days for the instructions to go through. I expect it would be similar in your case, and cancelling the day before is too close to stop the transaction.

You can't do it the night before, you have to contact the company well in advance and ask them not to present the charge on the account. A direct debit is something you signed to allow the company or supplier to take money from your account, your bank cannot stop it only the actual company you gave the permission to. You therefore would have to break your contract with them and it is unlikely they will agree isn't it?
You can only stop a standing order as that is your instruction to the bank so you can instruct the bank to stop it but by using direct debit allthe power is in the hands of the company you are paying.

You better hope it does go through
You signed up for something and signed up to pay by direct debit
And most likely the company you signed up with has penalties if they cant collect the money
So if it DONT go through its very likely you will get loads of charges on top of what you already owe them

The company concerned will already have requested the payment, and your instruction will not be in time for the bank to cancel the payment. You need to allow at least a couple of days - and possibly more, depending on the rules of your particular bank.

Cancel it with your bank and the company collecting the money.
If the bank pays it after you have cancelled it with them they have to refund the money.
