Windows get washed out. How can I stop this?
The attached photo is of a chair bathed by light from the windows, which have pale shades in front of them. What adjustments can I make on the camera (low end SLR) to control this. When I play with the exposure, the chair stops looking bathed in light, which is pretty much what it looks like in real life. The windows in real life don't look so washed out.
Thanks.

You might try "burning in" the window area which will darken it and add detail.

You could also using HDR (High Dynamic Range) to balance the exposure.
