how can you tell if your betta fish is alive?

I had a betta fish and I never knew if he alive or near death cause wasn't getting to food as quickly as I would give it to him

how do I measure fish food to ensure I do not give to much

    You can tell if a fish is alive or not by looking for gill movement. A live fish's gills will move as it breathes, even if it is breathing slowly. A dead fish will have it's gills flared out and the gills will be completely still no matter how long you watch them.

    Well, I'm pretty sure that when fish are dead they're upside down..
