How can I sort dates in chronological order in Open office Calc? They come up in order of first number of date.?

I have sorted my spreadsheet by date column B the data is sorted purely by the first numbers. The cells in the column are formatted as date in uk style dd/mm/yyyy. how can I format it in proper chronological order?

Update:

no1home2day, that's the obvious answer and one I tried before coming to YA, the last resort. Nothing happens when I do it, nothing changes, the dates still appear in the dd/mm/yyyy format.

later: I just discovered. In the input line there is a comma before the first number, if I delete that the dates go yyy/mm/dd, now how to remove the comma in every line quickly!

Use yyyy/mm/dd so that the year comes first, then the month, and then the day.
