In the fiction, Storm Troopers wear armor for several reasons. The first is that it was deliberately designed to be intimidating. The second is that it makes again a very intimidating uniform to unify the Storm Troopers themselves. The third is that it IS actually armor.
In the Star Wars universe offensive firepower outpaced defense, particularly at the infantry level where Storm Troopers reside. Basically any armor capable of allowing you to survive a full on blaster shot (specially from something like Han Solo's weapon, which is basically a Magnum of blasters) would immobilize anyone beneath its weight. Hence Storm Trooper armor isn't there to protect them from full-on hits, but to instead protect them from glancing blows and near misses.
The fact that armor cannot really save you is why most rebels simply don't bother.

Because it makes them feel fabulous!

It's suppose to help them sustain blast and blows but it honestly is made very poorly

So that it limits their ability to hit things like the broadside of a Corellian cruiser while also making it lethal if they are hit anywhere. Rage and pain fuel the Dark Side of the Force.

first of this is fiction not fact,,,,it's called costume/wardrobe....why do handegg players wear so much padding?, why do wwe/wwf etc compettitors wear such outrageous costumes?, its there to immerse the viewer as much as possible with the characters and storyline etc....If you really want to know exactly why, then you should prob ask the directors, though imho it's self explanatory..
As well making them appear more combat ready also gives a warmonger impression, ie differentiating the good guys from the bad guys..which is parmount in the directors thinking..as is the fact they are all identical by class, and therefore negating any sense of individual character but rather as one of the films itself is called a "clone" which follows orders and commands, rather than have any independant thought process..

it's ok to fight, as long as you look good, actual protection doesn't matter

They are dressed head to toe in shiny white composite body-armour, but it never actually saves any of them so why bother?
