If we stopped propping up the royals we would save fortune.

Some, of course but, a lot of trade would also be lost. People like to see a Royal Warrant on the goods that they buy.

None in fact it would gain as they are leeches who have robbed land which would be back in State ownership if we became a Republic.

Tourists would come without them and, even if it's true what royalists say they haven't got a convincing justification to how it all started, the injustice of it. I don't get their argument about how it would cost more to protect and pension off former presidents, John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron have huge pensions and police helicopters whirring over them when there is a high risk, it would cost the same to do that with former presidents. If any money was lost with the royals being abolished then add a few pounds onto corporation tax, something is always thought of to recoup lost money when it happens because of other matters. Then there are all the grace and favour homes the state owns but the Queen lets to her distant relatives for a peppercorn rent, these could all be taken back and rented for a market rate like any other properties are. Little known royals pay as little as £300 a month for stunning buildings that would attract £thousands in rent normally.

Impossible for me or any royalist to say, They haven't got the slightest idea of how much cash the royals bring in to the country. How much money do you think the UK economy loses because the Queen and her family use off-shore bank accounts?

The Royal family pay the Exchequer 100% of the profits on the Crown Estate, 25% of the profits on the Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster. These are the personal property of the monarch. If they were taxed as businesses, they'd pay around 15% - or less if they had Facebook's accountants. In return, the taxpayer pays the costs of running the royal firm. We make around half a billion a year profit on the deal. So we become a republic, the royal family bugger off to one of their other realms - like the Cayman Islands and the Exchequer gets zilch. We now have to pay the costs of paying some has-been politician to be head of state and neither Boris Johnson nor Jeremy Corbyn is going to come cheap - and they certainly won't pay us for the privilege. Of course the real cost is what would happen to our economy with a politician in charge bearing in mind what they are costing us at the moment.

And just in case republicans want to give parliament power to impose a 100% wealth tax on the Crown Estate and Royal Duchies - they'd tax you at the same rate.

The royal brand is estimated by Brand Finance (an independent brand valuation analyst) to be worth a total of £67.5 billion to the economy. You wouldn't get that with a president. Some people would cut off their own nose to spite their face when it comes to the politics of envy.

The royals do not say they bring in the tourists. The tourist board and economists say they do.

The Royal family is one of the most cost effective heads of state anywhere in the world so any consideration of costs would have to take account of the cost of a president and related retinue. Then there is the fact the Queen is not just head of state for the UK but for several other countries too. The cost of their new presidents would have to be added to the equation.

The Queen already foregoes all income from her Crown Estates and gives all the money to the government where it goes into the same pot as our taxes. That would not change if the monarchy were deposed as they would become state assets anyway.

Based simply on the cost of the royal family versus a presidency, there is unlikely to be any cost saving from getting rid of the royals. Given that they actually do bring in a lot of tourism, I believe the country would lose-out financially if we got rid of them.

The royal family do a good job as head of state and fulfil many other civic functions as well as providing non-political continuity beyond the political cycle. They are highly cost effective. Only a fool would try to fix what isn't broken and for which they do not have a better alternative.
