I never went even before being Christian.

To me, atheism is simple,

humble honesty.

Almost every day,

I have to put a tiny effort

into resisting

that tiny part of my mind

that wants me to pretend

that things it imagines

are actually real.

That part of my mind was built up

for the decade or so that I pretended,

hard enough to fool myself,

that the hypothetical God,

that I was imagining,

was actually real.

I finally saw that pretending

as the internal dishonesty

that it is.

If you can rationalize

that internal dishonesty,

you can rationalize anything.

That is because you are looking at it the wrong way. Religions make their living by people believing. A nonbeliever is a threat to that economy, as well as that power, should a believer listen to reason and become an ex-believer. Even at the individual level, atheism is a threat because it is saying indirectly that there are errors in reasoning on behalf of theists, which is why they attempt to defend their reasoning, believing that they indeed have good reasoning for the belief and chosen religion. Atheism is also a threat to the dream/fantasy even without saying a word because they are not acting as though there is a Godly afterlife, that this life is it. Atheism makes no promises in terms of absolutes, but it does clearly state there are no good reasons to accept the claims that magical super Beings exist, regardless of whether any actually do exist.

By the way, given your answers in this section, aren't you also part of the philosophy of atheism?

We terrify the religious nuts.

A rock falling on your head has the traits you listed.  It makes no promises or threats yet it is quite capable of destroying you.  Atheism does make promises and threats.  It promises you that you will be godless.  It threatens you with being seen as stupid or crazy if you do not support it.

Consumer bias is the primary driving force behind godlessness.  We have been weened on many ideas that get in the way of seeking God.  Ideas like "the customer is always right" and "Money and stuff will make you happy".  People who believe they came to their godless state with no impact of this bias simply lack wisdom about how the world works.

Each year trillions of dollars are spent telling us we do not need God to be happy.  We are so smart, so cool,  just the best to ever walk the planet.  This artificial ego boost is then used like a lever to sell us products.  By appealing to our ego, we buy what is being sold.

I was one of these people.  I watched lots of ads and I was absolutely sure I deserved the very best in life.  When I walked into a store I had better get good service and their best price or there was going to be an unhappy customer.  I was Consumer Pharaoh.  

You see, Archer,  the same traits groomed in you by the forces of commerce that make you a formidable and savvy customer also make people dislike you.  Complaining about bad service, demanding the most value for your money,  expecting the sale price to apply to you,  all of it makes you less liked by people.

So as you come here to be a customer to complain about God and tell people why they should not believe in Him,  you are just doing what you have been trained to do.  God has wronged you/the world in some way and you are here to register a complaint.

Atheism is threatening to people because it is seen as poison to our souls.  If I tell you I love you and then see you drinking poison,  I am a liar if I do not attempt to warn you.  It is welcoming because it is simple and only requires false pride.

Atheism will cease to exist.  It will either be the result of Jesus Christ returning or the word going out of use.  It is a very unpopular term and makes people trust and like you less.  Large segments of the polls show people preferring "none" over "Atheist".  It will become an antiquated term.

A bunch of mostly men all gather to declare they are so smart and enlightened that they have figured out God is probably not real.  As one of their first points of business they select a name that sounds sinister and most people do not like.  A Greek slur used to insult people for being rude, drunk, and dirty.  That is the wisdom of man at work for you.

If you mean threatening as in enemy, then it's ego.

But if you mean threatening as in the unknown, then it is insecurity.

As for the latter people, "threatening" questions can finally be answered (or at least sought.)

Religious folks can't comprehend life without the crutch of an imaginary friend, and people fear what they don't understand. I think it's very informative that they hate people who don't have an imaginary friend at all more than they do those with a different one. Their scriptures often libel atheists as well so it's what they're taught.

Your correct.  Atheists do not go door to door try to convert you.

Christians and other religions find it unthinkable that someone can believe there is no god and they think it is a threat to them.

The only people who see it as a threat are those who are not truly convinced that their god exists.
