Do I need a transit visa if I have a layover in Istanbul?
I am a U.S. citizen visiting Greece in the spring. I have a short layover (less than three hours) in Istanbul, Turkey on the way back to the U.S. Do I need a transit visa if I am not leaving the airport?

If you stay within the transit zone then you do not have to enter Turkey. Almost every country except the USA has this facility. If you arrive in the US and want to leave on a flight to another country then you have to go through immigration and then immediately leave again which is extremely annoying.

You can't leave the airport with just a 3 hour layover. By the time you get off the plane and go through immigration, you've lost 45 minutes or more if several planes have come in at the same time. Then you have to be back at the airport 2 hours in advance to get through security.
