Is Illinois part of the south or is it more Midwest ?

A lot of people from Illinois or Chicago consider themselves midwestern but many have country accents. Some parts of Illinois do look “southern” in a way.

Illinois is a northern, Midwestern state.  There is no way that the northern 1/3 of Illinois could be considered part of the South.

That said, the twang you reference is only heard among the less-educated rural and small town people living south of about Kankakee - and that twang is disappearing.  Southern attitudes (racism, fundamentalist religious beliefs, resistance to education, etc.) are somewhat more prevalent (but not dominant) in southern Illinois - probably south of about Centralia.

Source(s): I lived in various parts of Illinois for all but four of my 76 years.

Definitely not part of the South.  Midwest seems accurate.

Get into civilization (100 miles or more away from Chicago), and the state is definitely Midwestern.  Inside that 100-mile marker, the people want to be perceived as "sophisticated."

Take it from me, they are NOT southern or part of the south and don’t have southern accents. Born and lived my whole life in the real south..Louisiana and to us and other southern states, Chicago is yankee territory. To help you know for sure, google the Mason Dixon line. Everything below that line on a US map is the south. Everything above it is the north.
